I have an older LT1 in my '95 Z28 with almost 140,000k on it. It runs like a top and I have taken very good care of it (frequent synthetic oil changes, etc.). Even though it runs very nice, eventually it's going to need a little updating considering it's miles. It's no longer my primary ride and I'm trying to make an SS clone with updated suspension and other goodies over time. One of the long-term goals is either to replace the motor or send it out for a face lift. Regardless of what I do I want a little more power and figured an LT4 might be the way to go considering the similarity and same motor mounts. Do you think it's worth getting the $2400 "kit" to put on my existing motor, or is it probably too old and would require too many other updates to make it worth while? Should I just hold out for a complete/newer LT4 instead? Another question: Do LT1 headers bolt on directly to LT4 heads? I was thinking of adding these too, but will wait if I'd just need to get another set after the update...
Thanks in advance... -Rob

I have not done this yet! But feel the cost is worth the 100 advertised hp. Whether to do this on your engine or get an LT4, which is a 4 bolt main block, is debatable. The LT1 is more than capable of handling the hp so it becomes a matter of what you want verses cost.

There is no way I would just do a top end on a 140K mile motor, you're just asking for trouble.
I would do a 383 or 396 stroker with ported stock heads, ported stock intake, a nice cam/1.6 rockers and long tubes.

What do you know about Head and cam packages? Probably don't even own a F-body...
Let alone a 396 LT4 with long Tubes..right!?!? Posted by Scott Chab (Member # 174) on :

Good point... I'm an old school guy that only knows big blocks, 4-speeds and cars with metal bumpers.
