Hey guys am new here hope i could get some help i have a 86 camaro v-6 body style.I took the motor out and threw in a 305 with headers and 2 size bigger cam from stock (others not listed). I had the car bout 5 months before i had problems starting it after it was warmed up ex. run to the store, shut car off, get back in and it woul turn over slowly once then nothing, i would have to wait 30 min to an hour and it would start right up....i bought new starter, battery, and an alternator, i timed it and it worked fine for bout a month, now it wont even turn over. if i turn the key on it takes a moment till i get power in the car, when i throw cables on it it'll turn good bout once or twice then i get nothing again for a good 10 minutes. i can get the car started if i get it rolling and pop the clutch thats bout it now. Any clue?
Last quick question....I need a new trans in car, someone is selling me one but needs to know bout the spines or spikes for the clutch? what do i need to do to find out if that trans will work in my car or not? is it simple to do to put on lift and check or totally take the trans out and look? Srry so long and thx for reading Posted by 2002Z4CSS (Member # 1393) on :
Sounds like you have a real bad battery cable or connection. You need to perform a voltage drop on the negative and positive cables. Good chance inside the cable ends at the battery...they are all corroded. You can clean the cable ends by taking a screwdriver and prying the rubber away from the metal terminal.Clean the terminal and then reposition the rubber casing.Check the starter end of the positive cable to being clean and tight and the ground at the engine block. You may even have a draw on the system that drains the battery down.Use a 12v test light or digital multimeter to check for a draw.If using a 12v test light, disconnect the positive or negative cable from the battery.Install one one of the test light to the battery post and the other end to the disconnected cable. If you get a light, there is a draw.Start to isolate the draw by pulling fuses one at a time and relays until the light goes out. Then you will know what circuit is the concern.Try that.Let us know if you still have problems.

The above answer was perfect. Just want to add that you may want to check how close your exhaust is to your starter. Does it have headers? If so, you may be frying your starter due to heat. If thats the case, then I would get one of the small gear reductions style starters and make a heat shield for it as well.
You could also have a bad battery, I have seen them lose a connection intermittently inside of the battery many times. Just a thought, you might want to have that checked too, after you do the other tests. Good luck.

thx for replying i appreciate it. Your probly familiar with hooker headers, i have them with the y pipe and 3 in exhaust...so its probly is close to the starter. can i use aluminum coil to divert the heat? i dunno if it can withstand it...ill check what u guys say and get back to ya soon.
Any clue what am talking bout with the transmission?

I dont know what you mean by aluminum coil??? I have no idea what that is, unless you are thinking of the the heat riser tube used on older cars. The answer is no. I would build a flat or slightly contoured piece of sheetmetal between the starter and the headers, just so it deflects the heat away.
As far as the splines go, I dont know which one you have. The best bet is to go to a parts store, have them pull a clutch kit for your car off the shelf, and count the splines (grooves inside of the disc that the input goes into), and then match that up to the trans your are trying to get.

excellent ill do that and post to ya's and tell ya how it turns out. Thank you again for helping me out

If heat from the headers is cooking the starter, you can buy a premade small block Chevy starter heat shield at most preformance shops.Too bad you did not live near me...I have a new chrome plated one I would give you. Posted by RavenSS (Member # 2215) on :
u guys are great, very nice people, since this post is still alive wonder if u could help me with another question...
like i said in the before i have a 305 bored 30 over, 2 size bigger then stock cam, 3:73 gears, rebuilt heads from a 88 305 z28, edelbrock intake, hooker headers with 3in exhaust, lakewood suspension kit, my rear tires are 295 (cant remember others numbers, little smaller then corvette tires) i took it to the track and best run was a 14.6@ 94mph, anything i could buy thats not all that exspensive that would get me into the high 13's? my plan was to own the fastest 305 in town i raced someone in a trans am, he had a 355 with slp intake and other mods and i beat him by a nose, i was very pleased with that but i want to be able to smoke um, i know your all probbly saying "Buy a BIGGER block" lol i enjoy my little 305 Posted by Z28-SORR (Member # 1565) on :
Is it a manual or auto trans. Street racing or track. Go to CamaroZ28 or LS1.com to there drag racing section, lots of info there.

Carb or fuel injection?

The cheapest/easiest way to get that car to run in the 13's is to install a nitrous kit. Good luck! :0)

lol nitrous, wanted to stay away from that
srry z4 i relized i din put that down, i have a 620 or 640 (size around there)edelbrock carburtor 5 speed manual, car goes through 1st and 2nd pretty quick, its the begining of 3rd gear that i think i loss time, is the high-rise intake manifold good for that? i herd it was better at top speed 1st-40-45mph 2nd-60-63mph 3rd 80-83mp 4th 100+ 5th 100+ thats the max speed i can go in each gear about, speedo only at 85 hehe

If you have a high rise intake manifold, that will kill some torque that 305 will make and only make power at a high rpm. A non high rise intake would be your best bet.
