sorry for the seemingly gratuitous amount of posts from me today but this just popped into my head.
my mother is flying out to Oregon just for the weekend. someone told her to be sure to visit crater lake. is there anything in particular notable about the lake other than being beautiful? she was asking me and i wasnt really sure.
Tahnks!

First of all, where in Oregon is she starting from? We can give many suggestions as to all the great things to do in the State once we know where to begin.

someone suggested she should visit crater lake as it is incredible but she asked me if it was incredible just cuz its beautiful or if its got some oddity about it. like is it a hot spring er something like that?
i wanted to fly out with her, but i have school. id love to see that area! i flew over mt hood once!! [Big Grin]

Where in Oregon? Crater lake is pretty. It's also a full day's round trip from Portland if I remember. If she's in Portland, Mt Hood and the coast are a little over an hour's drive from Portland. Mt St Helens is a 1/2-3/4 of a day round trip.

Sounds like she is in the Medford area. Crater lake is about 2 hours or so away. Really nice old lodge there, great lake (worlds deepest, if I remember right). Chystal blue in color. Really neat, and worth the trip. [Smile]

Ah, my home stomping grounds.....the Rogue Valley. That's where I spent most of the first 25 years of my life.

There's an interesting thread on Roadfood.com about Oregon.

Crater Lake is a good 2 hour drive from Medford. This time of year, they can also begin to get snow. One great thing about that drive is on the way, you can stop at Becky's cafe and have Huckleberry pie in Union Creek.

Crater Lake is a water filled caldera that has the most incredible color blue. It changes according to the weather and cloud cover. It was formed when Mt. Mazama blew eons ago.

Crater Lake National Park info

It's a beautiful sight and worth the drive if one has a whole day to spend. A night in Crater Lake Lodge and a boat tour are the way to go, but the boat rides are closed for the season. The Lodge closes during the winter.

It sounds like your Mom may not have much time, so she may not get the most out of the park on this visit. There are many day drives out of the valley that are scenic. A nice one would be to visit Ashland, Oregon. There is a beautiful park and downtown area. It's very diverse and cultural. If she likes plays, she might be able to catch one in the evening at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Ashland is also home of Southern Oregon University, where I earned my Geography degree. (A B.S. in Geography - hahahahah!, no, really...that's what I have!)

Another fun thing to do is drive to the top of Mt. Ashland and on the way back down the mountain, stop at Callahan's Siskiyou Lodge for Italian food. (Where Steve and I got married, but it was much more rustic and not updated yet).

If she were just a couple of weeks earlier, another really fun thing to do is a Jetboat Excursion on the Rogue River. The fun one is the Dinner run. There's no way anyone leaves hungry. That's something to keep on your agenda (along w/Crater Lake) if you are able to visit in the Summer.

Well, that's what I can come up w/off the top of my head. At this time of year, it sounds like a day trip into Ashland and dinner at Callahan's Lodge at the Siskiyou Summit would be a really nice experience for your mom.
