Hi I just got my 2000 ss convertible in oct.
and I love it!Its black with black leather with a hurst 6 spd. So far I have put in a k&n filter(is it my imagination or does this make the car sound louder)and have been thinking of getting a borla exhaust. Someone told me I should get a torque converter, what is it and should I get one? Any suggestions on some mods that wont break the bank and are worthwhile=more horsepower would be appreciated.
thanx

A torque converter is for automatic transmissions. Since you have a 6 speed you don't need one.

Nice choice of car

See my photo album for the mod's I've done. Next on the list are:
* installing the '01 Bilstein suspension
* installing the Fast Toys cold air kit
* installing the shift lite
* 4:11 gears
* maybe a 180 stat ... I'm waiting for Hawkeye's final report on that
* subframe connectors

**installing means I've got the parts sitting in the garage

The '99s didn't come from the factory with 180 stats like the 00's?

How much was the K&N and do you have some part numbers for that? Also, when you spec out that Borla system, I would be interested in what they are going for. I am looking for new exhausts for both my 1993 Z28 and 1998 SS but I need something that is bolt on for the 1998 due to the rarity of the car.

I believe stock is around 195. Reading the Hypertech HPP3 manual it has fan programming for stock, 180 and 160 degree 'stats.

The K&n filter was about $50,I dont have any numbers for it I just ordered it from slp. As far as the exhuast I dont really know what Im going to do, I just want a lower tone to the exhaust and unleash a little(or alot) more hp.I wont be doing anything until next summer anyway, after buyng the car I have no money left!

Thanks for the welcome, any idea if you can bring a convertible to a car wash, its getting a little too cold outside for a hand wash!

Improved acceleration. 4.11's increase your rpm by 20% in any given gear at any given speed. Improvements of 2 to 3 tenths and 3 to 4 mph in the quarter mile are usual.

Welcome to the Topless F-body family!!!!
I haven't done much to mine yet but I think SFCs will be next. I want to stiffen the chassis!
And the car wash is a bad idea!!! Washing by hand is your best bet. The car wash just promotes leaks!

I believe one of the cheapest mods would be an exhaust cutout.. Im nuts about my cutout.. I leave it uncapped about 90% of the time... and it makes the SS sound INCREDIBLE...

Anyways.. Its a 3" FlowTech race ready.. I think I got mine from Jegs.. $40 roughly.. $20 for installation at local muffler shop..

I gained about .4 sec in the 1/4 mile.. good stuff.. Good luck with the SS.. nice to see ya on the board!

Ali,

Have you heard the loudmouth? How does it compare to the cutout? All I have is a straight through 14" oval Dynomax with a 3" tailpipe and it is still real quiet .... seriously considering running a straight pipe.

When you shaved 4/10's with the cutout ... were conditions the same? ... and your 60' times? Just wondering if there were other factors that may have helped
