I Havent started the SS in over 2 months because I have had the car apart and not able to start it, in past winters I would start it every other week and let it run till warm or a short cruise around the block to keep it good and lubed, Well now the Oil needs changed.............Now do I #1. start it and let it warm up then change it or #2. drain it all out and put in new Mobil 1 and then start it?? I would think that all the oil would have drained in to the pan and this would be the better idea but wasnt sure? Just let it drain for a long time to make sure that the cold oil has time to ALL drain out!

I would start it first and let it run to get the oil nice and warm then I would change the oil. This allows for all the stuff that has settled out of the oil to be re-imersed in the oil and drained out. I also park my car for the winter and I do this routine in the spring before I take my car out..

At this point you've got it good and drained down to the pan, your only issue will be getting the cold oil to flow from the bottom of the pan. If you can heat the pan with a halogen spot light or heater I'd go that way.

Does your 97 SS have a block heater? If it does, plug'er in for a few hours to get things nice and toasty and then drop the dirty oil. Why subject your LT1 to nasty oil? Especially since the oil has been dormant for 2 months.

I have stored my 2000 SS 'Vert for the nasty weather months ( AKA 'Winter' ). Before I put her away I dropped the oil and put fresh in. When the nicer weather rolls round, I will then drop the winter oil and put in some more fresh.

Everyone has his/her own way of doing things, especially when it concerns winter storage. Just do what YOU feel is right for your car.
