With today being Valentines Day, a message about taking care of your heart seems appropriate. Last year I lost 3 friends…all younger than me…to heart attacks. For some reason young people just don't take heart disease seriously. The health of your heart in your older years has a direct correlation to the care you take of it when you're younger. All of us have certain risk factors…some you can control, some you can't. Risk factors you can't control are your age…the older you are the higher the risk factor, your sex (well, I guess you can change your sex, but it won't help your risk factors)…men have a higher incidence that women, your race…blacks have a higher incidence that whites, and your heredity…is there a history of heart disease in your family?. Risk factors you can control are quitting or cutting back on smoking, eating a healthy diet, regular exercise, monitoring and controlling cholesterol levels, controlling diabetes, taking proper prescribed medications, and very very important…controlling stress levels. If you get into a healthy regimen when you're young, it'll pay off big time when you get older. And do you know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack??? Most people are under the misnomer that it's a sharp stabbing pain in your chest. Well it's not…it's a very dull oppressive pressure in your chest…almost like someone is sitting on it or tightening a belt around your chest. It is often accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, a pain starting in your shoulder or arm and radiating down through the body, or numbness or tingling in your extremities. You can have all these symptoms, or just a few. You might not feel really bad at all. The biggest sign that someone is having a heart attack is denial…people will attribute it to gas, a strain, something they ate…anything but a heart attack…especially if they're young…they just won't even consider that it might be their heart. Most people die from heart attacks within two hours of the first onset of symptoms. That's why it is so important to summon medical help immediately…it is far better to err on the side of safety in this matter. To delay this could cost you your life. And only as a very last resort drive yourself or the person in distress to the hospital…always have the aid come to you.

One final note is that if you haven't already, get certified in CPR. It's a 4-hour class that literally can keep your love alive. I teach over 2 dozen CPR classes each year to everyone from elementary school children to new mothers to senior citizens…and I have lost count of how many people that I have taught over the years have used their training and helped keep someone viable until medical help arrived. A cub scout I taught one year used the Heimlich maneuver on a classmate in the school cafeteria who had a completely obstructed airway and cleared it…possibly saving his life…while the teachers and cafeteria staff stood and watched…not knowing what to do. He did this 2 days after he attended the class. CPR really works, people…it keeps oxygenated blood circulating through the brain…keeping the brain alive…until medical procedures, drugs or defibrillation can bring the heart back to a viable rhythm. If you have young children, it is essential that you know it…most children die from accidents…drowning, choking, respiratory ailments, allergic reactions…the list goes on and on…and all can be reversed with the knowledge you'll take away from a CPR class. If nothing else the class will give you the confidence to take charge in an emergency situation. It's a small thing to do that can reap big rewards.

Do it for yourself…and do it for your family…

Thanks JimB0!! I am CPR certified for adults and infants. It is an easy thing to do and can save a life for sure!!

I lost my dad to a heart attack at 59! It was sudden. He was at work, then he was gone. He was overwieght, smoked, had a few drinks and never excercised. I have been able to keep the weight right, eat right, don't drink too much and excercise regularly. Get checkups often. If I could just quit smoking I would be better off. All this to offset my abuse from when I was younger.

Grace lost her dad to a heart attack at 59 as well after a long history of heart disease. They are both missed greatly.

That's another thing we men overlook; the Prostate examination. Men hate to talk about it cause they haven't had it done. IT CAN SAVE YOUR A$$!! There can be BIG problems going on down there that can be fixed fairly easy, considering...

On my first prostate exam, she said it wouldn't hurt at all
