We'll be looking at getting a new SUV in the next few months ... we turned in our 98 4 door Jimmy SLT at the end of the lease ... the buyout was too high and the vehicle itself was just too mushy and feminine for me to drive ... and picked up a '98 Blazer 2 door as an interim vehicle.
We have an '02 Envoy coming in with "our name on it" but I'd like to use the available time to start shopping with a blank sheet.
What do you recommend, and why? Forget about the land yachts ... the new Envoy will be as big as we will go.

Check out the Mazda Tribute. I'm not a fan of SUV's but Jo dragged me out one day to look at it. It actually not too bad looking and the price was reasonable. The model Jo wants is the LX V6 (200 hp, moonroof, cloth seats, power everything, 6 cd changer, all wheel drive, ABS, blah blah...). She wants it in the black with the metallic silver painted trim. The price is around $30K. It has alot of nice features for the pricing, it drives really smooth like a car and has decent get-up & go. Visit the Mazda site and you can download a brochure.

My wife has a '96 Toyota 4Runner and as far as trucks go, it's a great vehicle. We've gone 90,000 miles so far and it's been virtually flawless. The only issue we had was a passenger side door lock that broke. Other than that, we've just put gas in it, replaced tires and done regular oil changes.
Not sure how you feel about foreign cars, but they're worth a look....

Lease or buy? If buying stay away from the mitsubishi montero sport, because of the depreciation factor. They're great vehicles, but plan on losing an insane 50% of MSRP in one year. I think a new Explorer is coming out for 2002. I'd check it out. Your choice of the Envoy is a good one too, but I'd be worried about the crossmember though the oilpan. Just seems like a bad idea.

I have a ton of friends that have jeeps (cherokee sports) not the grand cherokee, I like them a lot! You prob could lease one for about $200 month! Just my $.02

Bad idea to get one of these. They're being discontinued this year, and they're a death trap designed 20 years ago.

Hey PoSSum, I, too, have a 98 Jimmy SLT, and I like it a lot -- with Edelbrock shocks. SUV's are such hot commodities these days that all the new ones are good -- they've got to be just to stay competitive. All depends on whether you want one with a truck-based chassis or a jacked-up car. I'd go for the truck-based chassis, personally. (If you want a car, get a car.) That said, I think the pick of the the litter are the new 2002 GM redesigns of the Blazer/Jimmy (with that fantastic new 275hp V-6 engine), or the new Ford Explorer with independent rear suspension. Both are supposed to be much better than the vehicles they replace ... and you could probably get a particularly good deal on the Ford since they are trying hard to recover from the Firestone fiasco. Of course, if you wait till the fall, they should be having fire sales on a lot of these ....

Grace loves her Xterra. It is not to tall and not to harsh but it goes great in the snow and there is room for the dogs and the kids. She had a 94 Blazer before that and likes the Xterra much better. I don't know much about the newer Blazers and I never liked Explorers. I spent my time looking at cars.
