Well, I picked up my car last night. The service writer showed me the parts that were replaced. The dog tooth gears were worn off the gears as I suspected. I don't know how this could have happened to reverse gear.

Both gears for reverse were replaced as well as the synchro (which also showed wear on the teeth) the shift fork, all of the bearings and retainers associated with the gears.

After checking out the shift fork, I don't see how one of them could ever get bent. The thing is a piece of cast iron with dimensions similar to those of a connecting rod.

I've only put it in reverse twice so far, but the repair seems to have been completed successfully. The folks at Quality Chevrolet treated me well. The service writer said that if I were paying for the repair, the cost would have been about $1000.

Looks like the HRPT is a go.

Nice to hear about the good dealer experiences too. Thanks for the update ... and now quit thinking "R" is for racing.

Quality chvrolet does a good job but they go 110% by the book so you can't really get away with anything on the warranty. Glad to hear everything worked out for you Steve
