Everytime when my car is hot (running temp) and I turn off the car and re-start it it makes a whinning sound. I brought it to the dealer and they replaced the air pump but it still does it. When I open the hood while it is running it sounds like maybe a belt or something???? Does anyone have this sound?? But when I put my ear to the right part of the motor (looking at it) it sounds like it is coming from there? Also when I start to drive it , it goes away. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks.

My idler pulley went bad, there is a TSB on it. The trick I use is to use a long screwdriver and put the blade up against the part you think is making the noise and hold the handle to your ear, acts like a stethoscope to isolate noises.

Hey DaddySS,
Can you share a little more information on this idler pulley issue. What were the symptoms and how involved was the fix?
Thanks, Sam

The pulley was making a whirring noise, the fix was incredibally simple, they replaced the whole assembly, pulley and mounting bracket, two bolts hold it all in, ten minutes.

Thanks for the info. I am getting a whirring noise when the A/C is off that is very annoying. As soon as I put the A/C on, the noise goes away. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Sam

Good info. I have same symptoms. Goes away after 30sec-1min, sometimes helps if I rev engine at startup.

Try my method to isolate the noise, I'll bet it's the idler pulley.
