Chrome hood scoop update

Okay, as most of you know, I've been trying to re-produce the chromed hood scoop grill inserts, that some of the fortunate SS members have. I have spent some time researching the costs assosciated with making up a group purchace deal. During my research, Deanne from our very own Afterthoughtsauto.com has offered up some of there volume buying help. I am happy to report that with Deannes help, it may become a part of their product offering at the store. Deanne is trying very dilligently to put the most affordable deal possible together. As usual though, the more interested parties, the cheaper they can be produced. As a matter of coincidence, Deanne is working on chroming some Grand prix parts, so it only made sense to hand it over to them. As of right now, the projected price for a minimum of 20 committed orders would be $70.00. Of course, the more interest in them, the less expensive. Keep in mind, the price may be a little more than the last batch done, but the quality and the product delivery should be superior. Like I said in prior posts, I for one definitaly want one so, Im working closely with Deaanne to make this a reality. BTW, the grills will be brand new OEM from GM, and no shipping haslles. Hopefully in the next few weeks, we should have more info on whats going on. Just FYI, a new grill from GM runs approximately $40 bucks, so this really isnt a bad deal if you consider the end result. Please be patient, and I or Deanne will be bringing you another update soon. Thank you, to the group who reponded to me by e mail, hang in there, were working on it!

Thanks Mary and Ralph, Yes I too have had excellant customer service, an they do have a good product line. My hope is that the products we all want can become a reality. So far I think they are on the right track, and Deanne is great at helping out with new ideas.

Great! thank you XLR8NESS for all your hard work in this project. 70.00 dollars does seem very reasonable considering the price of the GM part and considering how much it costs to chrome plate things these days. great work. please keep me informed. can't wait to have this turn into reality

After paying $50, $70 seems a tad steep. GM must have had a hugh price increase in the last year cuz they only cost like $23 each.

I would still like to have an extra one but hopefully the finish will be a little smoother this time.

I'd be interested too if the quality really is good.

I've heard of some folks being told that chroming costs for a single item could be $100 to $200, which does not include the part itself. Those local chromers may be excessively high but it shows you that when the cost of the part, chroming, and business expenses, $70 is fairly reasonable.

I hope you post when it is available. I don't know why none of the other companies have started doing this yet.

At this point i really dont know what the time line will be. Deaane had to go to a car show in another state, which i dont know if she was flying there or not, but with all thats going on I suppose it will be a while longer before i hear back on the status of this project. My last conversation with Deaane was that she and her partner were trying to find a local source for the plating. As soon as i hear somthing i will let everyone know. Im anxious to get one of theese also.

Deanne is back. She said if she can get 35 orders for these, they will be $60.00 each. They will be making a pre-order page on their site soon and we will post the link here.

Hi everyone. We have worked out the details on the "chrome" hood scoop insert for the SS. We checked several other sources to try and find a place with a lower minimum cost and hit a dead end. Many places are not doing plastic pieces or had a higher minimum. So it seemed best to go with the place that did them for you once before.

We have put up an order page, with a picture courtesy of Mark. The current price is $70 shipped. If we can get 35 orders the price will drop to $60 shipped. Basically we will keep a count going on the page and when we reach 20 we will have enough for a batch. I'm not sure the best way to let it stay open to try to reach the 35 for the savings. Maybe when we hit the 20 count we can let everyone decide if they want to wait and try for 35 for the price savings. I know everyone would like to have their new piece as soon as possible and I hate to make the first few people wait while we try to reach a higher count. So it will be sorta up to the first 20 people. We will buy some extra pieces so your new members who missed this will have an opportunity to get one. The minimums we have established are basically to cover the cost of the parts, the metallizing fee, shipping, etc.

As we get close to the number of orders we will go ahead and place the order with the dealer for the parts to save some time. We are also mailing 2 parts to the company today since they offered to do samples for us. The other part is the front grill pieces for the Grand Prix. We are hoping to get our Grand Prix club members interested and that may help the volume and price. Not having seen one of these up close I was curious how they looked in person and we won't have much luck with our Grand Prix club until we have a sample on a car.

If anyone has any questions please let me know. I can't say that I fully understand this metallizing process but it does appear to have great results.
