As of last Tuesday, 9/25, Linda and I finally became homeowners. We have purchased, and moved into, a large townhouse, complete with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, living room, dining room, family room, huge eat-in kitchen, finished basement and two car garage. As these townhouses were built two units to a building, it is an end unit. It's also up on a hill with a western exposure, so we have a gorgeous view of the sunset. It was a long haul, as we put our bid down on April 20th, right before we went on vacation to Jamaica. But we finally reached the end of that road and got into the place. Now comes the fun part, fixing it up! The first thing I'll need to do is come up with some creative ways to store all of our belongings, as we don't have much storage space. Then we'll put in a deck, and, if Linda has her way, we'll start replacing the lovely emerald green carpet with hardwood floors. But that's down the road aways.

On thing I can tell you is: I. HATE. MOVING!!!! We moved ourselves this time, over the last five days. Despite a couple of snafus, like the carpet installation for the basement not being done until this Wednesday, and the rental company not having me down for the truck yesterday (aaarrggghhhh), we got it all moved and only have a day or so of cleanup at the old place. Unpacking and putting away everything at the new place is going to take a long, lo-o-o-ong time! It could be months before we find stuff! And I got the best aerobic workout I've had in six years. Having to carry Linda's boxes of books up from the basement of the old place did wonders for my lower back, quads, knees and feet. Gee, can we do it again? Fortunately, I remembered to wear my weight belt most of the time. I'm just glad it's over.

Whelp, that's it. Just wanted to share that with everyone. Now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming!

Hey Jim,

Congratulations on your home purchase!

I did not see HVAC for the garage listed as one the items on your "fixer uper" list?

That is one of my personal dreams. I am actually looking for a used HVAC condenser and furnace so I can have a climate controlled garage.

Good luck on completing the list of home modifications.

Glad to hear! We just bought our first home also.... But we are waiting on the old owners to move out, they had 30 days..now down to 14. No signs of them moving anything so far

if they go past the 30 days it is only $50 a day

Congrats ... and just a bit of sympathy for your neighbors ... with the 4 of you moving in there.

Should of said something sooner ... I'm sure the SSOA and SLP folks from hundreds of miles around would have arrived with their trucks to help. Right Dan??

Great news, glad to hear it, now you need all of the "toys" 40hp riding lawn mower,50 hp snowblower, 20hp string trimmer, Hmmm, maybe this is why I get the strange looks huh?

And right now the best phrase to describe the place is..."Boxes R Us"!
I agree...getting all of it unpacked is a never-ending task, and so different where you don't get a basement to store stuff! I got used to that in Canada, but they're none existant here. So I can't even get Black Beauty under cover yet!

Yep, "Boxes 'R Us" describes it best. We do have a basement, roughly 400 square feet of space, but right now we have nothing in it. One of the prior occupants used the basement as a bedroom, and he smoked. So we're in the process of renovating it: we've already had the carpet replaced and currently have cleaned (explain that in a moment), washed, spackled and sanded the walls and ceiling. This person was a 31-year-old who had put these glow-in-the-dark stars all over the wall. The stars ranged in size from about a quarter of an inch to an inch-and-a-half. He must have had hundreds of the small stars stuck on the walls and ceiling. Those usually peeled right off (unless this Einstein had painted over them), but the big ones had a foam adhesive disk on the back that could only be removed by scraping and sanding. What a pain!

Needless to say, all of the stuf that should be in the basement (my desks, a couch, filing cabinets, wall units, my DJ equipment, shelves, etc.) is filling up our two car garage. Once the basement is finished, maybe we can start finding stuff.

I got lucky there - my parents offered to let me keep the SS in their garage until we cleared enough space in ours. Hopefully I'll be able to get the basement finished this week, so that I can pick the SS up this weekend. I miss it: perfect fall weather and I don't have it to drive.

Just thought I'd share a wonderful episode we experienced in our new home this weekend. (And, no, Dan, that's not what I'm talking about!) Sunday evening I was installing the shelving in the laundry room. After I finished, Linda started loading the shelves and I went upstairs to take a shower. Right after I started my shower, she comes running upstairs and (no, Dan) says: "Water's leaking from the walls." Well, it seems that I attached the right side of the shelving to the PVC drain pipe from the bathroom.

And so I went to Home Depot yesterday to figure out how the hell I was going to patch this. (Yes, I think Home Depot is going to become a very, very familiar place to me over the next few months.) I picked up some epoxy putty to fill the holes, some PVC primer (purple stuff) and PVC cement, and a 10 foot length of PVC pipe. No, they didn't have any smaller pieces. So, last night I cut out the sheetrock around all three sets of holes, plugged them with the putty, cut three 1.5" x 3.5" patches, and used the primer and cement to apply the patches. Tonight I'll test it to see if everything took.

OUCH! If you were attaching to a stud, there should have been a nail plate behind the sheet rock to protect the ABS pipe.

Totally off the subject, but, what equipment do you have? I'm a hobbist DJ of sorts, and I use a QSC RMX1450 amp, a pair of Yamaha S115-4, and a Gemini mixer which I hope to replace soon. Just wondering what stuff you use and what kind of music you play.

Even though I didn't get home until 9:00 last night, I replaced the sheet rock cutouts and spackled them in. I had to hollow out the back of each cutout so that they would fit around the patch. It looks good so far - they actually fitted in quite nicely.

Well, I usually play hard-core country punk at my events, along with some new-age metal.

I'm actually mainstream, with my music collection ranging from 60's-90's pop, dance, rock 'n' roll, R&B, etc. My party style is somewhere between a club, a fraternity party, and a beach/surf party.

As for equipment, well.......from the top: a Pioneer Stealth CMX-5000 dual CD player, into an MTX Soundcraftsman mixer, into a BBE Sonic Maximizer, into a dbX EQ, and into a Rane Dynamic Crossover. At that point, the signal is split, with the left and right channels going to an AB International 250W/channel amp, and onto a pair of Klipsch KP-250 3-way speakers (which are mounted on speaker stands). The bass output goes to a Crown PowerTech-1 amp, which is bridged to provide a mono 575 Watt output, then onto a Klipsch KP-115 15" Subwoofer. I have three road cases for my equipment, each with it's own Furman PL-8 Power Conditioner. One road case holds the dual CD player, my two wireless microphone units (Samson Stage 3 handheld and a Samson Synth32 headset) and my mixer. The second case holds the EQ, the BBE Sonic Maximizer, the Dynamic Crossover and the AB Systems amp. The third case holds the Crown amp and a hardware drawer. I also plan to add another subwoofer to augment my system: I'm looking at the JBL SR4718X 18" sub. I decided this after I blew the Klipsch sub this summer: here' a link to that thread on the SLP Board:

Well wow! I must say, I like your equipment and your mainstream choice of music. Much better than the hard-core country punk.

I like your CD players, but I really like the new Pioneer CDJ-1000's. Thy are really fun to play around with, with some excellent control of the song in real time. I haven't mixed with the CMX-5000, yet, but I'm sure that they are good too.

Have fun with your new sub if you decide to get one. I would however like to toss in a sales pitch for the Yamaha SW118 sub, which I had some good experience with, is about 400 less than the JBL that you are looking at, and handles more power, with a lower frequency response (30 Hz vs. 38 Hz). I'm sure that you have good reason for getting the JBL's but I really like this sub....it hits hard and is definitely reliable.

What holes? Drain pipe? Who said anything about drilling holes in a drain pipe? Look in my laundry room: do you see any holes? do you see any drain pipe? What are you talking about? There's just blank, painted wall with shelves over it. Who'd ever make such a foolish mistake as drilling through a drain pipe? Not me!
