One of our customers '70 Z28 was stolen from our shop this past weekend. Camaro people tend to notice other Camaros, so this is an attempt to get the word out so we can try and recover this car.
Keep a lookout by word of mouth, in local papers, swap meets, Auto Trader, etc. for a 1970 Black Camaro Z-28 with White hood & deck stripes.

Stolen between October 5th (4:00 p.m.) and October 8th, 2001 (7:30 a.m.)

Taken from a fenced, locked compound at McGees Auto Service, LLC (5717 SW Jean Road, Lake Oswego, OR 97035)

Color: Black with white hood & deck stripes.

This car has:
 Black interior
 4-speed Muncie
 12 bolt rear end
 Brand new, ZZ4 crate engine assembly
 New, MSD Distributor
 New, Edelbrock 750 cfm Carburetor
 Short rear spoiler
 Short style seats w/separate headrests
 Stock Z-28 steel wheels
 Original air cleaner (LT-1 style, dual snorkel) was loose in the car
 Non-original exhaust manifolds
 Tach & gauges (tach inoperable)
 Condition: #7 inside & out

Oregon License plate XUG 170
VIN 124870N519818

Please call McGees Auto Service at 503-635-8252 or the Lake Oswego Police Dept. at 503-635-0238 immediately if you have information that may help in the recovery of this vehicle.

Best case scenario would be that it will show up back at the shop overnight so we can return it to its owner.

The police won't look for it (they don't really care), so I'm doing what I can to try and get it back.

Thank you.

It's the Camaro at the left side of this photo (in the shadows).

That really stinks, Teri Sorry it happened, I'll keep my eyes open here in SoCal...

Hope someone's just taken it for a joy ride it turns up undamaged! It should be easy to spot.

Unfortunately fences, doors and locks only keep out the honest people.

don't know if it will make it this far - but will watch.

BTW there is an SS just like that around the corner from my house.

Man. That stinks Teri. Hope everything works out. I'd hate to think how I would react if someone stole my baby. Too quote Lance in Pulp Fiction (edited because this is a family board) "Don't mess with another man's car!"

Teri,

I've been the victim of an auto theft and know exactly how you are feeling. My 53 5 window cab Chevy PU was stolen after I dropped an new engine and tranny in it. The engine had less the 500 miles on it. The truck went through a full off body restoration. It was one of the most sickening feeling I've ever experienced. The police were of absolutely no value and took over two hours to respond.

Best of luck and hope they find the low life scum that stole it.

John

This engine didn't have ANY road miles on it. Just what was put on during the test drive, the dyno and being run in and out of the shop every night for a couple of months.
The owner wasn't able to come pick it up, and rather than run it in and out constantly, it got locked up out in the compound.
He's not as stressed about the car as Steve and I are. It almost feels like we had a family member kidnapped!

Sorry to hear about that Teri. I am from NY, which is far way from you. But I will keep me eyes open anyway. Hopefully it will be recovered.

Thanks for keeping watch for this car.

Update: We got word that the stolen Z28 was dumped and recovered in Vancouver, Washington. We haven't seen the car yet, but we're told the engine, trans & rear end are gone. We don't know what else may be missing.

The owner is supposed to go pick it up soon.

Keep us posted on what you find out. I'm glad it has been located and hopefully it is not damaged (besides all the go fast stuff being missing).

Man that really sucks! If the tranny, engine and rear are gone, they really trashed it. picking up a shell of a stolen car will not be pleasant. Hope for the best.

I hope those losers O.D. on the crack or heroin they buy from the profits on the sale of those parts.

Not that it will do much good, but were the engine, tranny and rear end marked with any kind of ID or theft protection etchings?

Posted by HTWLSS (Member # 117) on :

I don't think anything was marked.
Steve had just installed the ZZ4 crate engine. The car had been sitting there a month waiting for the owner to pick up. Steve didn't want to keep driving it in and out of the shop every night (the engine wasn't broken in), so it went into the locked compound. It was already paid for and waiting for pick-up.

Evidently, the 1970 only seats and deck lid w/the short spoiler, along w/the hood, gauges, etc. are still on the car. It'll be interesting to see if the original air cleaner/snorkel is still loose in the car. If so, that tells us that they weren't interested in the car itself (being a '70 Z28 w/rare options), but had to have known what was in the car mechanically and had their eye on it.

Looks like whoever stole the car knew what they were looking for, or sold it to someone else who did.

At least the car was found to give you some sort of closure.

Possible inside connection? (I'm not saying inside job, but someone who knew someone in the shop.)

We only have 2 employees. A Technician and a Receptionist. They're both sick about it too.
We do have the feeling that someone knew a little too much about the drivetrain of the car and must have been watching it.
