I had the opportunity to ride some laps at Bragg-Smith with instructors Dave, and the other Dave at the wheel. It was a lot of fun to feel the car much nearer to the limit in capable hands ... turning laps much quicker than Z-06's with level 2 students at the wheel ...

It was also encouraging to hear the positive words they had for the setup ... "definitely laps faster than a stock hardtop SS". Interestingly enough, the stock brakes and cooling are the current weak link.

While you guys were having fun down south, I decided to play professional race car driver up here at the local road course (couldn't stand it that you guys were having all the fun). Man I wish I knew how to drive (can you say double donut?)

Hey Art ...

I just got back from a Level 2 course at Bragg-Smith that I attended this past week.

I asked Dave P. how the SSOA event was and the first thing he said was how great your car was. He also commented how the Canadian speedo freaked them out on the straight between turns 7 and 8.

Level 2 was great. A lot more lap time. They had just picked up some of their '02 Vettes (two coupes, two Z06s w < 200 miles on them) so we got to help break them in properly.

I didn't master the power circle, but did get a lot of experience controlling a spin out. I actually could induce the slide, but couldn't maintain it. I was always too late on my steering input or too heavy on the throttle and over corrected. They did another power circle session the second day, but I opted for track time instead.

I took an SS out during two of the free lapping sessions. The Camaro was a handful to drive but a complete blast! Makes you appreciate what it takes to truly drive the Camaro versus the Vette. The Vette almost seemed tame in comparison.

Randy, exactly the same story that we had (except there were no 2002's yet!!!)!! The power circles were tough!! I took an SS for a session so Joey Red could try the Z06. I was tired after that run. It was hard work!! Amazing cars, all of them!

Guess that means SLP knows what they're doing when they develop suspensions.

DanA -- You were only tired? Heck, I was sweating after the second session!

The '02 Z06, for all it's 405 HP badging, didn't seem a whole lot different than the '01. The suspension was a bit stiffer (apparently they changed the shocks and spring rate) so you felt the bump coming off of turn 2 a bit more, but overall it felt pretty much like the '01. One of the new '02 Z06s actually had some kind of ignition failure on the third day and had to be taken out of action. Would that tick you off? Pick up your brand new Z06, put 1,000 miles on it and have it die on you?

For those of you who haven't been to Level 2 -- it's worth it.

I've been doing some basic math on how many sets of tires I can burn through practicing power circles for 3 days of tuition.

I am convinced that is the only way to go faster. We reached the limit of how fast we can just go around the corners with the right line. Next is to use the throttle and brakes more. I want to practice!!

Believe me .. it I had it cranked!

Level 2 1/2 sounds good. Dave P. was mentioning how Rupert goes through the corners sideways so it must be the fastest way around the track. He also said it's a great way to keep people from passing you.

I'll vouch for that. When I smelt differntial fluid and took the white Z06 in, Ruppert decide he was going to test it. He took me for a ride and really pushed the diff. He was sideways in the corners, on the straights, up hill, downhill, I don't think the wheel was ever straight. I was holding on real tight!!
