When I had the A4 trans go last Nov, they replaced it with no charge to me, 2700 bux to them.
It's a 99 but I already have 49K on the clock

I will always buy an extended warranty for whatever car I ever buy. The reason? The following experience I had:I purchased my "old" SS (1987, Monte Carlo) back when the cars only came with a 12 month/12000 mile warranty. I had the option of purchasing an extended warranty at any time during that period. Just before the period was up, my parents had their engine go at ~40,000 miles in their Ford LTD - and it cost them a bundle to replace. So, I got a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty for $800 and change.
Good thing I did. Up to the end of the warranty, I figured that I had recouped almost twice the original cost of the warranty. Then, at 99,324 miles, I started losing antifreeze and couldn't figure out where it was leaking. So, I took it into the dealership to have it checked out. Turns out that I had a cracked engine block. The warranty ended up covering over $3000 in parts and labor. (Looking back, I don't know why they just didn't drop a new engine in, but, oh well) And the head mechanic took me aside and suggested that, since the labor was all covered, I should replace the parts they weren't covering. So, I practically ended up with a new engine. And I figure that the money I saved will cover the cost of an extended warranty for every car I will own in the future.
By the way, my "old" SS is now my bad weather car. It's at 229K miles and still going. Not a bad deal!
