Any one else get an extended warranty? I don't plan on doing significant mods and I'm not that mechanically inclined.I got a price on a 7yr/70K mile deductible policy for about 60% less than the dealer offered me at the time of purchase. As far as I could see the policy from the dealer had the same coverage as the one I got. I couldn't resist.I'll let you know in seven years if it was worth it.

... I purchased one thru the dealer (not the GM one) for a 6yr/ 100K mile extended warranty. 0 deductable. Cost me 1500 bux, that they financed for a year with no interest or finance charges.

When I had the A4 trans go last Nov, they replaced it with no charge to me, 2700 bux to them.

It's a 99 but I already have 49K on the clock

Yea, they're worth it.

I got the extended warranty mostly for piece of mind. Helps getting it at purchase time and financing it with the rest of the purchase price.

Note to self....Jan. 7, 2009, check with Ronin on value of extended warranty!!

Ohhhhhh.....not the dreaded extended warranty question. Oh well, I'll post my standard response, which I keep on my computer in a MS Word file for occasions just like this.
quote:
I will always buy an extended warranty for whatever car I ever buy. The reason? The following experience I had:

I purchased my "old" SS (1987, Monte Carlo) back when the cars only came with a 12 month/12000 mile warranty. I had the option of purchasing an extended warranty at any time during that period. Just before the period was up, my parents had their engine go at ~40,000 miles in their Ford LTD - and it cost them a bundle to replace. So, I got a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty for $800 and change.

Good thing I did. Up to the end of the warranty, I figured that I had recouped almost twice the original cost of the warranty. Then, at 99,324 miles, I started losing antifreeze and couldn't figure out where it was leaking. So, I took it into the dealership to have it checked out. Turns out that I had a cracked engine block. The warranty ended up covering over $3000 in parts and labor. (Looking back, I don't know why they just didn't drop a new engine in, but, oh well) And the head mechanic took me aside and suggested that, since the labor was all covered, I should replace the parts they weren't covering. So, I practically ended up with a new engine. And I figure that the money I saved will cover the cost of an extended warranty for every car I will own in the future.

By the way, my "old" SS is now my bad weather car. It's at 229K miles and still going. Not a bad deal!

I wrote this three years ago in response to a post on the old SLP Board (I think). My old SS now has 247K miles on it and is my winter car.
