2002 Camaro SS #2609 is wounded at this point in time! I literally twisted the drive shaft in 2!!!!! The drive shaft is so badly twisted that the car couldn't be towed on a flat bed tow truck so they had to use a regular tow truck to tow it. The bad part is that this happen within site of my dealer that it will be taken to in the morning but since it is closed they towed it all the way to Louisville to lock it up in storage to be towed all the way back tomorrow morning. I have tons of digital pics to post but will not have them up until tomorrow. It is truly amazing as to how bad it is twisted. The tow truck driver kept asking me how the h*ll I did it and I told her that I had seen other camaros earlier in the day that had no problems and were pushing 400+ at the rear wheels, I said there is no way that this just happened. Anyway that was my experience for the day and I will have more details later. It only has 2500 miles on it!!!!!!!!!
This is a new record for me. This time it only took me 5 1/2 days to destroy this car!!!
No but it REALLY sucks!

Holy smokes dude! They better fix that under warranty. There is no way it should do that at this point. Good luck!

I think that it was either the Dark Window Tint or the Zaino that did it.

Ouch!!! Is that cardboard I see inside the driveshaft?

I was wondering that too but didn't want to ask. Maybe it is a high-performance, carbon-fiber, composite, internal shipping tube in case you want to send the driveshaft back to GM.
Ummmm, does that metal look thin or is it supposed to be like that? Is this what they call a 'composite' drive shaft?
Posted by 2DCHLDHD (Member # 598) on :
Yes it is cardboard, supposedly put in to stop the dreaded tink. And yes that looks VERY thin.

That rip just happens to be inline with the weld that someone did to the exhaust pipe. Maybe a relation between the two? Posted by Steve da Wrench (Member # 1301) on :
Ok, and so why was the exhaust welded on? My guess it was a heat fracture from the welding.
Good luck on that, and let us know how it goes.

Judging by the fact the weld is right by the spot where it was broken, I am in complete agreement that whoever did the welding work on your exhaust probably cause a bit of heat damage to the thin material (as we can see) that makes up the driveshaft.
I hope you know the dealership, cause they aren't going to warranty it if they see that damage
Hope everything goes well for ya buddy.

I seriously doubt it was the welding that killed the driveshaft, from my experience it could have been a defective driveshaft. My father is a 35+ year veteran in welding (I just have possibly 6 years under my belt) and we know that welding in close proximity to the driveshaft wouldn't have caused that problem. I even welded my driveshaft loop in place and I haven't had a single problem.

I'd like to see the point where the failure started.
I'd suspect there was some form of damage..ie., someone ran over a curb, or hit something...or was lifted wrong, etc....
I'd also like a little more info on what was happening when it broke, i.e a hard launch, throwing the car into drive after backing up w/o hitting the brake, etc....or simple acceleration.
The way the metal tore instead of twisted tells me there was damage or a fracture at the intial point of failure....the shaft obviously suffered an extreme sudden rotation. Someone also asked if the rearend siezed up
Kinda' fun to play Sherlock Holmes (especially since no-one got hurt!)...you know, you might want to get the broken shaft to Scott S. or someone in GM engineering IF there is no other explanation.
In fact, look at these points...appear to be damage at the initial point of failure...
