We have read the owner's manual front to back (I hate doing that) and I see noting about an early oil change (I always thought new engine 1st change at 500 miles) and nothing about if it has or should use synthetic oil. My plan was synthetic oil for life and an oil change sometime long before 3,000 miles or when some idiot light comes on, but maybe I am just to service orientated? Let me know (Steve da Wrench are you out there?)

2002's started getting synthetic oil (Mobil 1) somewhere around Oct 1, 2001. Our change intervals were at 500, then 1500 and then 2500 mile increments from there (Steve's a stickler about this stuff). Stick w/your plan and you should do just fine. You can never be too service oriented. Frequent maintenance is your friend!

The consensus (because we're all too service minded and in love with these damn machines)is to change your oil after your 500 mile break in with the synthetic of your choice but it should have Mobil1 in there now. Then change at 2500 to 3500 mile increments after that.

time can be as important as miles. even if your mileage is low - at least twice a year - spring and fall you should change the oil, and the filter!
like HTWLSS said, frequent maintenance is your friend!

Synthetic Oils are not all the same. You will get most owners here telling you Mobil 1, there is another and is 100% Synthetic, not like most of the rest. Amsoil is the way to go, their 0-30 Series 2000 is perfect for your new ride. Also, their Filters are ten times better than anything on the market. Sure you pay a little more, but look what you get. Amsoil sends out a newsletter every month talking to racers who use their products, anyone else do that? I don't think so. I have six engines to look after, not including the lawn mowers around here, the product really does make a difference. Amsoil also used in my M-6 trans, rear end diff.
