It's all a matter of which salesman you talk to, I guess. Steve and Teri tried a couple weeks ago to offer a free dyno run on an '03 Cobra to the dealer but they were far too anal about the car (as if it were a Porsche or Ferrari...hah!).
One of the guys in the local Corvette club stopped by the same dealer and a different salesman practically threw him the keys. The salesman thought a trip to the dyno sounded like fun so they drove the car down to Steve's shop. I'll let Steve tell the rest of the story, but I figured I'd post the graph after uploading it for him. The run viewer only allows 3 runs to be graphed but the 4th was almost the same as the 1st so I left it out.
As you can see, it's putting out the advertised power and then some...

I met a fellow in the engine dyno room at Fords.
They are all coming in around 410 - 416 at the crank, the lowest he's tested was 406.
That's for real.
The bar has been raised. C'mon GM - let's get moving on the 5th gen Fbody!!
Posted by OBSSD (Member # 1258) on :
Yep...the bar certainly is higher...but only at higher RPM's. I had to compare the best Cobra run with my car's best run...they're neck and neck up to 5200 RPM. The only reason the Cobra has the extra power is because it can hold the torque in the higher rev range.
Blue - '03 Cobra Red - Mine with the antiquated pushrod engine.

I had not thought about comparing the LS-1 to the cobra! Thats a very interesting comparison! So if you were to race one, they would only have you on the very high revs. But then wait.......... the mustang is heavier (especially in the frontend), so may not handle as good either. Only time will tell. But it gives us something to strive for, C-mon GM, lets see a 405 hp (or more) engine in a 5th gen camaro!

OBSSD or Steve ... do you have a Z06 graph you can superimpose with the Cobra?
Posted by DanA_F99_1977 (Member # 118) on :
Here you go Possum
Posted by poSSum (Member # 119) on :
Thanks Dan ... but that's not "superimposed" Posted by OBSSD (Member # 1258) on :
Sorry Art, the only Z06 Steve's had through the shop has been heavily modded (although, "modded" is too kind of a term). Dan, did you by any chance get the data files for your dyno runs? If so, you can email them to me and I'll superimpose it with the Cobra.
Posted by poSSum (Member # 119) on :
I was just bugging Dan ... comparing the graphs works just fine. I like the Z06 powerband better Posted by OBSSD (Member # 1258) on :
We all wanna bug Dan ...but I'll still superimpose them if he has the files (I wouldn't mind seeing it).

Teri/Steve, can you get an overlay of my dyno up there. Be good for comparison of a 4 cam to another 4 cam.

Geez, I guess. That car looks scary fast!
Hey Cy, how did you post the dyno run graphic? I was going to post the results of mine, but could never figure out how to do it.
Posted by DanA_F99_1977 (Member # 118) on :
Nope, I only have the printout's.

Jeff, I downloaded their free run viewer and used a graphics program to capture the screen shot. You could also scan your printout, if you have access to a scanner.
WOW! Jeff F actually reads this board! I will put it on disc and give it to Cy this weekend. Yours is much better, but doesnt show anything below about 4k when I put them both up together, for some reason (must be a program glitch).

But it's his first post...he probably just did it so he can show off his car's power Don't worry about the disk, Steve; Jeff emailed me his runs.
Sorry Jeff, but your's isn't any better than the Cobra (from 2500-3200 RPM ).

I think the run from 4k was the top end run. And yea, I just dropped by to see what was up ;-)

Why are you comparing a supercharger to a non-supercharged. Even the odds, and the slobra does not even come close. 320.9 HP 331.5 torque before the SLP Y-pipe, MASS flow sensor, smooth bellows, Redline fluid change(engine, trans, rear)AC rapidfire plugs, air box mod installs. 1/4 mile @13.34 at SLP days Englishtown New Jersey. I will post the dynojet sheet and time slip when my scaner is fixed.

Supercharger = cheating
Posted by cryptopsy (Member # 1593) on :
dude a supercharger is not cheating that is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. I have a 2002 z28 and I am sick of hearing f-body guys making excuses. The new cobra is a sick car no matter how you cut it. If a honda beats me with forced induction I don't care. A fast car is a fast car. Ford put out a powerful car so stop putting it down and making stupid excuses like "if I have a supercharger I would win." Ford won the battle the f-bodies are done now.

Ah....that's not a "Dude" and I'm certain "She" was joking.

I had a Callaway Camaro (450 h.p. at the crank) for 4 years before selling it to Alfred. I've held off buying another Camaro until I knew for sure what was going to happen for '03. Now that the Camaro is dead (for now) I'm looking around. I was thinking about an '02 SS but after reading up on this new '03 Cobra and seeing one up close and personal I'm (don't beat on me too hard!) going Ford. This is one hot ride folks. Nothing less than a Z06 will touch it. For the sake of the future of these cars, though, I really hope GM comes out with a decent 5th gen Camaro that will heat up the battle. Posted by John -- '02 HAWK (Member # 164) on :
nothing will touch it?
yea right, there have been several raced here in the DFW metro and they have been beaten by minorly moded fbods.
If you mod them yea you can get a real beast, but then your talking the same thing with the ls1.
I wont even get into the amount of broken ones that I've heard of

I dynoed a 03 Cobra this weekend at New England Dyno and Tuning.
It dynoed with 500 miles it made 350 rwhp. It came in this weeknd with 2900 miles, with a Ford Lightning pulley, a K&N air filter, and a cat back.
It dynoed at 433 rwhp with less than $900 in parts.
Sorry but these cars are very impressive, there is more power in the car cause we checked the air/fuel ratio and as soon as its in boost in the higher rpms it get to almost 10:1, Looks like the factory tuning is doing this to keep the cars runing good for warranty purposes.

So, where is the 396 at?
Posted by PoppyZ28 (Member # 873) on :
As a previous owner of a Callaway Camaro ('94) I will always love the Camaro -- especially the 1st. Gen. I never thought I'd switch to the blue oval but I've got to tell you that this '03 Cobra is for real. One magazine tested it on the track and turned a 12.9 @ 114. Others seem to be in the 109-110 area. That's serious horsepower. I just can't wait around wondering what GM is going to do in 2005. And if they end up with a glorified enlarged Cavalier type body with the LS1 they're still going to lose out to those who prefer something a bit more sporty.
I read an article last year which illustrated a proposed "retro" 5th Gen Camaro designed after the '69. It was one sharp looking ride in my opinion. Why couldn't they be creative and go that route? Ford and Chrysler are willing to gamble a bit but GM chooses to be conservative. They are coming out with the SSR, but that's a truck and they know trucks sell. I'm sorry to say that Ford is going to get so far ahead that GM will probably kill any proposal for a true Camaro replacement. That's just my opinion. And from what I hear the replacement for the new Mustang in '05 is going to push the envelope in styling and technology to a new level. Probably a lot higher than GM is willing to go. That's sad.

Ford has a new supercharged Cobra????
I had NO idea.........how many other people know this......
