Good day all, waiting for one of my daughters to show up with her Saturn. Gotta do her brakes today. Needs rotors and some work on her rear calipers! Any hints or suggestions?

What kind of work on the rear calipers? Make sure you lube the caliper slides.

We had a WS-6 out a few times last year. Phil Reddy (Fast Toys) has had his supercharged Z28 out ... and does very well ... but he tends to show up more often with his ragtop 'vette. Dealer says that rear calipers need replacing. They wanted over 1K dollars for rear calipers, all 4 rotors and pads. I figure I can make the rear calipers work well enough without replacing. Figured I would take the apart, clean thm and replace seals.

Geez...1 grand for that? Hopefully they're just full of it and the calipers are fine (even if they are thrashed, they shouldn't be very much to replace.

Ok, so the front was breeze, replaced pads and rotor on passenger side and made sure I lubed the caliper slides. Used the no squeal stuff and all. Used loctite on the bolts and all is well.
Then I get to the rear. Put a gallon of WD40 on rusted bolts. Manage to get one caliper slide bolt free and then get the impact wrench with the compressor to try and get the other one free without breaking it. Then, I broke it.
Took the rest of the bracket off the car and am now struggling to get the broekn part of the slide out. Tried heat, hammer, WD40 so far. Any other suggestions. I have a good grip on it with the vise grips. I should have been done by now. Gotta love daughters car. Not as clean as mine.

Any ideas for the broken slide?

Dan, if there is enough of the broken bolt to grab with vise grips,use a cutting torch to really heat up the bracket then try to remove the broken bolt. A propane torch will not be hot enough. Worse case, you will have to drill out the bolt and re-tap out the hole.I think you will be ok with more heat. If you don't own an a set of torches,maybe go to a muffler shop or garage that has some,and maybe they will heat it for you!

I can tell that you work on cars too! A torch (heat wrench)is a valuable tool in a shop! Heck I have even put the hoses thru a basement window to heat a pipe in the house that a propane touch would do nothing! Posted by NVMY02SS (Member # 1422) on :

Update!! I got it out! It was a pain in the butt, as weas the otehr side. It turns out it was not the threads that were frozen, it was the caliper slides themselves. Someone must have done a brake job before and did not lube them which is probably why the dealer thought the calipers were frozen and wanted to replace them. I heated them up real good and then got them out. I cleaned out the holes int eh brakcets really well, greased the caliper slide bolts and used anti seize on everything. It turned into a project, but I was victorious and didn't get angry once! LOL.
Thanks for the help guys, I knew I could depend on you! I need a torch for my garage!
