Hello everyone,
Went to just scope out Lightning's today and ended up dealing on one. I currently have an SS 2001 Onyx black. I am having the same ring chatter and oil consumption problems as many of you. My dealer has given me crappy service and is giving me trouble on this problem also.Well should I trade for a 380hp lightning or keep the SS and watch it fall apart!!!!???? [Confused] [Eek!] [Mad] [Mad]

Call GM Customer Service, if you feel you're not getting anywhere with them try to find someother alternative! I would keep the SS and find some solution! [Smile] [Smile]

LONG LIVE THE SS!!!

Who says the Lightning will not give you any problems either? Let the dealer fix the SS from the TSB.

I'd keep the SS --- what other answer would you expect on the SSOA message board [Roll Eyes]

If you really want to take the big $$$ hit and get a Lightning ask the question on a Lightning OA message board. [Razz]

I'd have one of each! [Big Grin]

what answer did I expect??
hey guys I did not expect such bias replies from you all. I mean I did choose the SS,I am a chevy man through and through I also have an 89 Iroc Z immaculate (though it is not an SS). I am just tired of having problems-a dealer who won't help-I mean come on it's a 32,000$$ car should I have to deal with this. Just honest educated opions is all I am looking for. I have already written GM customer service twice to no avail, still have not gotten an answer. Thanks to all and take it easy on me ehh [Smile]

The smilies are to let you know it's all in fun. This just isn't the place to ask for unbiased opinions [Big Grin]

My bias runs real deep:

1. I'm from the "I'd rather push a Chevy than drive a F**d" camp even though F**d deserves a lot of credit for producing the Lightning and Cobra.

2. I don't like trucks because of their weight and high center of gravity. We have an SUV, but it's transportation, not a "fun" vehicle.

3. Dealer service is "hit and miss" no matter where you go.

How much oil are you using? I believe the magic number is 1 quart per thousand miles to get GM to fix it for you.

Last thought, I suspect it would be cheaper to pay to have the ring work done than to take the loss trading your car on a Lightning.

Well, here is an honest response...with no bias. I have a 2000 SS and I have had a few problems with it. I had to have my pinion seal replaced, my clutch pedal return spring broke, my steering rack leaks, a strap on my convertible top wore through and broke and my passenger side window rubs on the top when opening and closing the door (the top was shut in the door at delivery). I am not a typical SS driver though. My car is a daily driver but I don't drive it hard. I have never had it on a drag strip, auto cross or road course. Every once in awhile my fiance drives it and he is much more aggressive. I don't really have a problem with oil consumption and I have not had a problem with my rotors warping. These two things seem to be quite common on f-bodies. I have not had a lot of luck with my local dealerships (which by the way I did not purchase the car from). I have a friend that has a shop in town and I have them do the work on my car. My factory warranty is almost expired so all the extended warranty work will be done with competent mechanics.
Now..for the Lightning...these trucks are just flat fast! We have a 2001 Lightning and it ran 13.48@101 stock. The weather was really great that night. So far we have not had any problems with the truck but it is not a daily driver. We have since added JDM longtubes and catback but have not had a chance to run the truck. it is too hot right now to get a good time. These trucks respond to mods very well. A simple chip and pulley will get you deep in the 12s. I think the chips run around $500 and the pulleys run about $150-$200. However, I have seen a lot of people have engine problems when they get too lean. You have to be very careful with the computer chip and make sure that you are not going lean.
The cost for a loaded SS and a Lightning are very close. However it seems a little more difficult for some to get the dealers to come down on the price of a Lightning. The last thing I will say is that the Lightning holds its value more than an f-body. I recently looked up the blue book value for both vehicles and the Lightning was worth more than we paid for it!
Anyway, good luck either way! With these two vehicles you can't go wrong! [Big Grin]

Unlike Anakin Skywalker don't go to the dark side and keep the SS.

Keep the SS

Hey Rags, think your avatar needs some work! [Smile]

If the SS does not make you happy anymore, you should sell it. There is no point owning something that frustreates you. However, if it's only because you have had problems, but it's ultimately the car you want - keep fighting to get it fixed.

The Lightning may be fast in a streight line, but it's a truck. A very cool truck, but still a truck. I don't think it will ever perform overall as well as your SS. But, if that's what you like - get one as life is short and it only matters if it makes you happy, not us.

Thanks everyone for your input! [Wink] Great honest responses, Yes I love the car (come it is an SS, what's not to luv, broke or not.) I think I am going to hang on to it for a while and write a few more letters, and go to the dealer again and kick som "***". But I am also giong to get the truck too. Great vehicle and any way I will need something to haul my car to track if it ever get's fixed. What better place to put a ford (A CADDY for the CHEVY!!!!! [Razz] [Cool] )
Later guys/gals
