Tim did the clutch in his '95 and filled the tranny with Dextron 3. He says the shifts feel notchier and is wondering if that could be a factor. I drove it and it felt fine to me.
Also, doing all out powershifts, there seems to be some slipping and a "whoosh" sound ... like a turbo wastegate. Any ideas?

My understanding was that Dexron III was more like a synthetic blend fluid than Dexron II was. I had a warranty concern on a LT Blazer I owned when towing a 18' Sea Ray boat and the the zone rep recommended that the trans fluid was to be changed with Dexron III. Dextron 3 is the replacement for 2. That way they can use it other vehicles like chrysler and ford. It has different (better) fluid characteristics than 2, but it does the same thing, and shouldnt have changed anything. steve.

Dex III is completely "backward compatible" with Dex II... when III came out, GM stopped approving old formula, showing they are satisfied III will work fine in any vehicle calling for II. There are a lot of junk products on the market labeled "ATF," or "use this in applications calling for Dexron III" (catch the subtle difference?)... so be sure to use a reputable brand which actually says Dexron III on the label... most list the GM approval number. GM maintains very tight control over the formulation and approval process... so, if you have "real" Dexron III from any reliable oil company, it is essentially the same stuff. One possibility: the old fluid had deteriorated enough that new fluid "feels" different. Another: mechanical problem in the rebuild.
