I've been looking for a replacement for my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a number of months, but I can't decide what the buy.

Here's the criteria;
- must be brand new (2003 or newer)
- a car or SUV
- max $50K US or $65K Canadian
- sit at least 4 passengers comfortably (2 or 4 door)
- mid size
- good (sporty) looks
- a performer (200+HP, preferably a V8)
- good ride & handling
- good in snow (4X4 or traction control)
- not Japanese (I like the cars but I'm on a car allowance that limits me to NA or Europe)
- reliable (no or low warranty issues)

Here's my short list, so far;
- Mercedes CLK 320
- BMW X5
- BMW 5 series
- Volvo X90
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Chrysler 300M
- GMC Envoy

What vehicle would you suggest I buy, based on the criteria?

Drive 'em all and see which one gives you the "gotta have" feeling. [Smile]

I'd wait for the Cadillac SRX to be added to the mix.

I have a Z06 for you. It has three modes of traction help. [Smile]

OOPS, sorry just read it again. Won't hold 4 comfortably (could get back and forth twice pretty quick though) and it is a 2001.

The "gotta have(s)" were the Mercedes CLK 55 AMG & Bimmer M5 - 400+HP, but they're way beyond my budget. These cars drive like nothing I've driven before. Unfortunately they've set the benchmark, so I'm finding I being way too critical when looking at other vehicles. [Frown]

I'll have to get Steve & Teri to build me a Z06T to tow behind for the other 2 passengers. [Big Grin] If I didn't enjoy my SS so much, I'd take you up on your offer.

I dunno if you're a truck guy, but how about the new Silverado SS that is due in early 2003? It's got a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 good for 345hp and 380 lb-ft. of torque, all-wheel-drive, performance suspension, extended cab, etc. I think it's supposed to start at about $38k or so. Check out the website below for more info, and I think Chevrolet's website also has some preview info on it. If you want more detailed info on what's good or bad, do a search for "Silverado SS" on Google.

Chevrolet's Silverado site (click on "SS Preview")
http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/index.html

Good luck!

John ....

With all the new product coming down the pipe, if you're happy with the Jeep, and are just changing for change sake, why not wait a year or so?

It's important to me ... imagine the scenario ... we are visiting you and heading out to dinner ... you only have your BTR ZO6 for transportation .... so you take Grace to the restaurant first so that Marion doesn't have to wait by herself, then you pick up Marion. Once Grace, Marion and you are there, you figure "I've made all my trips" and enjoy your dinner ... meanwhile I'm fighting with your dogs for a little of their food [Eek!] [Eek!]

That's probably the real reason I'm having trouble. All the hype about the new GM and Chrysler vehicles in 2004/2005 makes me wonder if I should wait. Decisions, decisions ...

[Smile] . The SS woudl be in the garage right next to the dogs kennels. The key is in it and since you prefer to drive and SS, it's there for you!

I like the sound of you being here with Marion!! That would be cool!

My objective response would be either the Chevy Trailblazer or the BMW X5. That trailblazer sure has a ton of options!! ...and looks and performs quite well!

Of course you are welcome too!! Everyone here is. You can bring your new Trailblazer. I think they are really nice. Get the one with the DVD player so I can watch movies in the back.

I had one of the first Envoys and it was a great vehicle (SLT w/premium upgrade).Sold it after a year for the SS. Sold it for $100 less than what I paid for it (GM disc.). One to look at from your list IMO. [Smile]

A friend of mine just got his new Volvo. It's the all wheel drive, stick shift, moon roof etc.

It's quite a nice car! Not the Volvos of old for sure.
