I was asked how to check the oil in a car. My response was it is best to check it when the engine is at full temp. I asked myself when is the best time. When the engine is cold or hot, before or after it has been started.(not running) When do GM engineers determine where the full line on the dip stick is,and under what conditions. Is it better to have the level at the full mark or the middle of the safe area.

I believe the manual says check it after driving, but wait at least an hour or so to check the oil so it can all settle back down. That's what I usually do. (correct me if I'm wrong about that in the manual) Posted by MM (Member # 1247) on :
I've always checked all my vehicles when cold BEFORE I start them up. I keep my stuff perfectly on the "full" line.....

I check mine after it is fully warmed up. I shut it off, wait 2-5 minutes and check it on a level surface. I always set the oil level at that time right in the middle of the range. So it reads closer to full when cold.

I check my oil every time I buy gas. I wash the windshield first, to give some time for drain back. I expect the reading to be a bit low, because that's really not enough time.
