So I've been waiting all summer and fall to do some of the mods to the vert and of course now I've gone a bit crazy....

On order:
1.) Torq Thrust IIs, 17x9.5 front, 17x11 rear - spokes will be painted the new Corvette charcoal gray metallic then clear coat with the new POR15 Glisten clear.

2.)BFG KDs, 275/40 front, 315/35 rear (hope it all fits with no hammer mods).

3.)BMR LCAs and Panhard to keep them planted.

4.) GMMG chambered exhaust and Megs oval angle cut tips

To be ordered Monday
5.) TTS or Grots (not sure which yet) long tubes

6.) ASP underdrive crank pulley

7. 160 stat

8. Cold air induction

So help knock some sense into me before I order the Comp Cams extreme energy, LS6 intake, Wolfe roll cage, and BMR SFCs <img border="0" alt="[silly]" title="" src="graemlins/silly.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[ergh]" title="" src="graemlins/tard.gif" /> [Eek!]

I think the 315's will require a tiny roll job on the wheel lip.

Take lots of photos!

i speak from knowledge....you will have to make mods with those size tires on the rear.....remember my drag radials Rich.....315's?

Well get the hammer out...the lower inside front of the wheel wells need to be bent in about 1/2 inch to clear the tire safely! HOWEVER>>>there is no need to touch the fender part of the lip..............it wont scrap!

Rich...you might want to talk to Bryan(absolute LT1) he has the TT's on his firechicken(lol)

I took the drag radials off when i got the new Chrome rims for the ss....

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the mods's, on the street and track in Bowling Green next year.

I've been sittingon the "Wolfecraft" fence for 2 years now and still haven't made a decision. [Roll Eyes]

Yep, this should be lots of fun. Have to decide if I will install the headers myself or have someone do it (suggestions on a place to do it welcome).

I hope the headers and GMMG aren't too loud - that'll be interesting (never got a chance to hear Ralphs at BG.

I have to get a test piece for the Glisten PC, sure don't want to mess up the new wheels.

I hope the wheels fit well, don't want the rears sticking out for that rice look.

And I'm looking forward to showing you! (and seeing you again).

I know what you mean about the cage. I've been on the fence about the headers and exhaust for over a year!

I think the BMR SFCs and a six point cage would make our cars really solid, but I don't think I want to deal with the rail. The four point would give some lateral stiffness and may also provide a good frame for some kind of retractable windscreen, hmmmmm......... [Roll Eyes]

...Ralph's car was/is loud. Depending on your preference, you may want to (re)consider that. Personally, I love the sound of the chambered and still consider bolting that up to the SLP Y-pipe that I already have. (I've even picked up an extra set of dual-dual tips if/when I go for chambered...
Suspension, ... I have the following on my car: (BMR) strut tower brace; LCA's(poly-rubber); Panhard; and Tunnel brace. I ordered the poly-rubber LCA's since I was concerned more with ride quality and noise.
...Header installation -Ralph was very happy with the people who did his, ...but PA may be too far for you...

Yeah, I think I'll be OK since I drive very lightly in the neighborhood, if not I think I'll just have to toy with resonators on the tailpipes or a bullet on the intermediate pipe. Did Ralph have Cats do you know?

I ordered the poly rubber also for the same reason, can't wait to get started. I'll start posting pics as soon as the parts start arriving!

When I heard Ralphs car at Bowling Green it had the off-road pipes in. It was loud but thats how I like it. The GMMG and headers definetly has a different sound.. [Smile]

Took a picture of what I have so far - tires, wheels, headers, exhaust, LCAs and Panhard. Hope you don't think it's boasting, just getting excited about getting it all together and installed.

I am going to paint the TT spokes gunmetal gray and then clear the whole wheel front and back.

I have the FLP LT headers and the GMMG chambered exhaust. It comes w/ORP and hi flow cats. At Bowling Green I had the ORP on. After about a month,I put the cats on. It was just too loud for normal driving with the ORP on. It only takes about half an hour to change the ORP and cats. The ORP aren't too bad till you get on it,then it really raps. I had the GMMG on before the headers. The headers and the cats made it a little louder, but it still sounds great. When I go to the strip or an event some place,I'll put the ORP on again,so everybody can tell my car from the rest.
I had Rapid Motorsports install my headers. It only took Mike 2 hours. He can do any mods you want. He is very knowledgable on LS1 engines. If you need any other info,e-mail me.

I like the idea of having Rapid do the work for me, even though they are about 2hrs away. Second choice is Cartek (much closer). I'm going to try to get it done on the 21st when I come back from Germany. If I go to Rapid, I'll contact you Ralph, and thanks for the info!

I definitely want to hear this when you're done... I love the Chambered exhaust, ....and those headers look awsome.

Question, ...(for those that do have headers installed), ...Can you get to the plugs??
I know it's not easy with stock manifolds, ...how much worse is it with the headers?

RagSS, Its easier to get to the plugs with headers on. Another advantage to having headers.

Thanks Kevin, I hope you're right! I am really excited about getting this set up installed. I spent a great deal of time looking into and deciding which headers and exhaust to install. The ASP underdrive pulleys and SLP cold air induction have arrived also. I have a call in to Rapid to get the installation scheduled.

As soon as I get the installation done I'll let you guys know, maybe we could hook up on a nice weather day.

In the mean time I have to figure out the details of how I am going to paint the wheels. I'll keep you posted on progress there too.

That setup looks great. It's gonna be a fun winter getting it setup.

Question: Is it necesarry to have custom programming to run a 160 stat? I really want that mod, but don't want to use an HPP3 and LS1 Edit is expensive...well they both are.

My future mod plans will eventually require custom programming, but it will be limited. I think I can get it tuned at a shop and call it good.

LOL, yea I know, and changing only wheel is going to look pretty funny too! I didn't want to unwrap, unbox, etc. everything and was trying to give a "view" into what was planned.

I don't think you need custom programming for a 160 stat mod.

...I was wondering what headers you got, ...until I saw one of your previous posts.
You got the TTS LongTubes ? (and do these come with the Y-pipe, cats, hardware, or are they purchased separately) (if separately, what brand?)
...Thanks Rich...

...Andy, ...since you have this set-up (Berger with lower suspension), ...are there any clearance issues?
I have an '02 vert with Bilstein that it could be an issue with.

Thanks,

Kevin:

The TTS come with high flow Cats, y pipe, and all necessary hardware. I chose them for a few main reasons, clearance - they tuck up very nicely, quality - the flange is over a 1/2" thick, fewer welds overall, etc. and reliability - they appear to be a quality piece, the shorter distance to the cats (like SLPs)offers better assurance against throwing codes (I think), etc.

All I had to buy in addition was a new set of OEM manifold gaskets.

You don't have to get programming done with the thermostat but it won't be fully effective if you don't. The thermostat will just open sooner but the fans will still turn on at the same temperature. So around the city it will run the same temperature as stock but on the highway it will run cooler. If you got the fan settings lower through programming then it will run cooler in the city...

Posted by RHT (Member # 902) on :

Thanks - that was my understanding [Frown]

I don't want to spend $350 on HPP3 just to turn the fans on early.

Maybe I'll go w/ LS1Edit since I would like to have a cam someday...but $600 bucks today just to run a little cooler is a lot.

I don't like the fan switch either...just not clean enough for me and only seems good for the track.

Oh well, LS1Edit may pay off w/ future mods.

The headers are actually nice and tight to the underside of the car. The driverside of the Y and the driverside cat hang down a bit and I have scraped them a couple of times. The worst killer are speed bumps. Other than that just fine!

Wow! Sounds great DaddySS. I can't wait for the pics. Where is Rapid Motorsports located? I'm in Northern NJ (I'll be using Hawthorne Chevy per your recommendation) and that might be a good place for me to get some performance work done in the not too distant future. Maybe I'll even get to hear your setup before I make my final decision on headers. [Wink]

Rapid is in Penn. about 90 minutes from us. A bit of a distance but I've heard a lot of good things about Mike and his shop, and that's where Ralph had his done, plus it gives me the chance to meet up with Ralph (hopefully) while I'm there.

We have a couple of choices, there's also Cartek in Garfield and SLP in Toms River.

I will get lots of pictures (if they will let me) and I can't wait to show you guys when it's done, so I'll be sure to try to set something up.

Thanks DaddySS! Those are the shops I came across and I also found a place called Total Performance off on Rte. 202 off of Rte. 17. However, I would feel better going to a shop with the best customer feedback...but I, unfortunately, don't have to worry about that for a while.

Well I am off this morning to get the headers and exhaust, along with the stat and underdrive pulleys installed, then over to the dyno shop to have it tuned.

I got the SLP CAI installed the other day (but haven't tried it out yet), should be interesting this morning in 5 degree weather. By the way I have good tips for anyone about to do this install.

Have cameras and will post pictures hopefully tonight.

Just got back! Mike at Rapid Motor Sports did a great job.

Installed:

TTS Long tubes, GMMG exhaust, ASP underdrive pulley and 180 stat. We went right over to the dyno and tuned her so no running rich, SES lights etc.
No banging, tucks up nicely, all in all a good thing. I have to get used to the sound though - much louder but a very nice note.

Not too impressed with my numbers overall, but they are what they are so that's fine.

320.5 RWHP, 329.6 RWTQ

It pulls incredibly thoughn and get's stronger from 3k to right up to.....

The dyno doesn't show the CAI gains either.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your support on this little project, I'll post pics later..too tired right now. [Big Grin]

It was nice seeing you again Rich. Had a good time. Glad you made it home safely.I had my SS tuned by Mikey also. Had it done on the same dyno. I got 333.8/rwhp and 342.8/rwtq. Thats with FLP LT headers with cats and GMMG chambered exhaust. In the spring I am going to get it done with the ORP on,to see if there is a difference.

Last dyno was 308.5, so this is a pick up of only 12 from Headers, high flow cats and performance exhaust. It seems that one of two things is the case; either the previous was high or this is low because I definitely feel a great deal more power, especially in the higher RPM range.

The dyno is a dynojet, and I don't know what SAE corrected means!

Thats with FLP LT headers with cats and GMMG chambered exhaust. In the spring I am going to get it done with the ORP on,to see if there is a difference.

Great to see you again Ralph. Sorry I wasn't a better host but it was too darn cold, and I was a bit nervous about all the work being done!

We finished up at about 2:30 and headed over to the dyno, finished there at 4:30. I saw your graph - impressive! My torque curve is excellent, on the previous dyno I broke 300 at 3700, on this run I break 300 at 2800 and break 300 horsepower at 4600 versus 5200 before.

Anyway...it runs and sounds a lot better. [Big Grin]

compensates (normalizes) for temp, humidity, etc so you can compare runs on different days.

Thanks Chris. How do you know if it's SAE corrected, would it say it on the printout?

Absolutely true. When you think of the alternative - Banging the floor, throwing SES lights, scraping the ground, leaking, running rich, less power, etc.,etc. that we we have all read - equally important to me is reliability and performance and I think I've achieved that. I have wanted a true muscle car with a set of headers on it and a muscular sounding exhaust for a long, long time and now I have it, so no complaints here [Big Grin] (although I do need to figure out how to leave the house at 05:45 like I normally do without waking up the neighbors!).

I want to keep the kind of subdued look yet have a car that acts and sounds mean so I'm getting there.

Thanks everyone for your continued feedback, I really appreciate it.

I have heard his dyno usually runs a little low. I will find out in spring. I will be taking it to a dyno in Machanicsberg,PA. I was there in November with 12 other guys. It only cost $50.00 for 3 pulls. I hope you are satified with Mikey's work.

Just for your information,at Camaro Superfest this coming July ,Werks Motorsports will have their portable dyno there again this year. They just accuired a sponser,Castrol so they will be offering 3 dyno pulls to any Camaro registered for the show, for FREE!!!! This means when you pay the $24 show entry fee,and get your car dynoed for free, you have one heck of a good deal. [Smile]

That's almost a offer I can't refuse. Hope we can free up the time to attend this year's event.

Rich, the printout should say whether or not it's SAE Corrected. I don't know what version of software the shop's using, but here's an example printout from a shop last year running the DOS version:
http://members.surfbest.net/moehlc@surfbest.net/SS/Performance/2002-01-12/2002-01-12.gif

Also, if you can get the actual data files from the shop, you can download Dynojet's free run viewer and compare all your runs (see http://members.surfbest.net/moehlc@surfbest.net/SS/stats.html?Category=Performance&Page=Dyno for some screenshots I copied).

Hey DaddySS,

Sounds like the new stuff is working (and sounding) pretty good. Now it's time to really wake up the new configuration with a cam. It'll give you that true musclecar sound you know you're still craving. TTS headers and GMMG exhaust is great but wait 'til you hear it 'under the influence' of a cam... [Wink]

Plus, it'll bump that horsepower and torque right up to where you need it.

I think you're right about the dyno. I'll get a better sense tomorrow when I take her out for a spin. I was tired, the car was full of all the old parts, it was dark etc. so I didn't check it out too much, tomorrow I'll open her up a bit.

I am very happy with Mike's work. It was a pleasure to watch someone who knows what they are doing, is careful, and knows these cars inside and out.

Congratulations DaddySS! Glad to read that you were pleased with the work and that it was a quality job. I might need more details on that shop come mod time. Looking forward to the pics and hearing your car hum..... [Big Grin]
