I like it ... BUT .... until GM demonstrates it can take concepts and bring them to market without destroying the character and while the enthusiasm is still alive, I'll refrain from getting excited about anything they show. Case in point ... the SSR.

I agree with possum. I still have to look at the specs page. IF they actually were to produce a car like it........I think the grille should be made to be less tall, and laid back slightly at the top. move the gilles to just in front of the rear wheel(brake cooling ducts), move the ss to the front fender, put a small lip spoiler on the rear to give it some styling, make a small body crease across the rear just above the license plate, change the center console and controls, but keep the cluster and steering wheel, make it a two door, and call it a CAMARO!!!!
BTW, did you notice the IRS??

I am very passionate about this stuff (as you have seen from some of previous posts on the subject) so excuse my venting:
It is so clear that GM needs to fire their designers - each iteration seems worse than the previous one. In my opinion, performance enthusiasts (the theoretical target for these cars) do not want a gimmick loaded, "generation x", car. They want a car that looks, feels and acts like a performance car. The body on that car has some good design features but they need to lose the back doors and quater window (save that for the sedans), lower the side panels (it looks too much like the new Z or that horrible Audi), bring the exhaust under the tail lites and out of the rear 1/4s, and dump that interior altogether - what the heck is that, a contest to see to see who can make the interior look most like a commercial kitchen appliance?
It is incomprehensible to me that this is the best they can come up with and someone in a GM board room actually looked at it and said "Hey that looks great, I bet people will go for that!". Probably the same group that looked at the Aztec and the Avalanche and said "Hey, those are winning designs!"
Excuse the vent...it's just frustrating to have a passion for cars and see this as the offering.

I like it but I assure you the last thing I want in a performance car is a friggin TV in the back. Leave that for the minivaners.

I still can't force myself to like it overall. There are a few things like the big wheel/tire combo along with the brakes that look pretty aggressive and seem like they mean business, but the rest of it brings only one word to mind...."ghey"..... Thumbs down. Bury it with the Pacer X.
The only thing about all the gimmicks is that it COULD be a ploy to incorporate a bunch of gizmos, so the bean counters can say, "It's ok, but cut off this, that, and that other thing and we'll do it." Then, what you have left is the performance issues. Sacrifice the gravy side to save the performance. (I seriously doubt it, probably more to truth it is a bunch of designer butt-kissing and position-jockeying maneuvers so the boss will promote them if they like their styling ideas)
I certainly hope this is a prototype only. But some ideas could be incorporated into a more deserving style of car with an SS badge and give people who buy the SS something to back up that badge.

I gotta say..... they did a good job on the Mustang.
If the Camaro comes out that good..... all will be good in Motorcity.....
nfb-I saw the concept Mustang, which is being talked about as as '05, and it's very retro...but quite effective! It just arrived Sunday night, at the LA Auto show. People gathered round and seemed to like it. Also saw the '03 Cobra and the new Mach 1...GM can do better...but will it? I did like the seats in the Cobra...really nice, with huge bolsters!

I'm liking it. The styling definately shows muscle, and performance no less. Just dont like that grille in the front. Too big (reminds me of a chrysler). Interior is quite modern an kinda fits...I'm sure most dont like it, but coming from a younger generation, would be awesome to see something like this produced, but things like these always disappoint us and never go further.

I am still on the fence about that car. I REALLY like the new GTO.
I am just not sure about the design of the SS.
The new Mustang Coupe looks really nice. I like it. Probably never buy one. (I am afraid of Ford cars, since all I ever owned were Camaros. )

I like it better than the GTO. the SS & GTO both scream sedan.....but this one really is.
I won't get excited either because they probably won't make it, or if they did, they would make to many changes before production.

Makes a bad first impression, but I could probably grow to like it. Well, except for the rear - looks too much like an old Opal to me.
Also, the nav system screen is too far out of the driver's line of sight. It'd be nice to have it on a heads-up over the speedo.

It looks ok but its no Camaro. I think the front end needs work and its a four door? It would be alright for a new Impalla SS? What GM needs to do is bring back the style of the '69 Camaros, '70 Chevelles, and other great GM cars they used to build, in new updated models, like Ford is doing with the Mustang and GT40. People love them cars, but wish they could go to the dealer and buy one with all the new stuff on them like fuel Injection, a/c, abs, air bags, big brakes etc. Just like the people are doing for Power Tour Cars with LS1's in old Camaros with 18" wheels and go anywhere they want in comfort. They need to ask the people what they want. I think GM needs to rethink and bring back the classics.

At first glance it's not that bad. here are my likes and dislikes at a glance:
Likes:
-The Performance stats. -overall design, nice and sleek, but could still use some work. -Wheels. -The doors look like it makes it easier for you to get in and out. -the tail lights look cool. i like the "red ring" look. -the side mirrors are also nice and sleek looking. very aerodynamic. -like the idea of the front fender gills. kind of like the '69 look on the back fenders. -i really like the interior. blue and silver are my two favorite colors. love the blue instrument displays. the steering wheel is also nice the the SS in the center of it. and the idea of a GPS being available is cool. definately help those of us who go to BG from far away. -the shifter is also really neat looking. also a retro 1st gen look. -the head lights. they look kind of the the luxury type. -I also like the idea the Steve had about adding brake cooling ducts.
Dislikes:
-I noticed that it did not have Z rated tires, just R rated. what's up with that? -even though the doors are user friendly looking, they have too much of a sqaure look to them. -the front grille is too tall and fat looking. it should be slimmed down and longer. like the current style. -the rear bumper molded way to much into the rest of the car. that is great for aerodynamics but hurts the look in my opinion. plus if you get rear ended, there goes you whole rear, not just your bumper. -Exhaust tips. they should definitely not come through the rear bumper. they should hang down below it. it leaves no room for aftermarket upgrades that so many of us like doing. plus the whole rear ending issue, you can kiss you exhaust good-bye too. -the "SS" badging should be higher on the door, or placed on the front fender. -when you look at the car from the front, you can see two humps over the front wheel wells on either side of the hood. very ugly looking to me. -the back of the two front seats should not have that tray that comes down. looks too much like an airliner seat. good idea for food i suppose, but who among us are going to be eating in there cars? well, at second glance i see a CD player in it, hmmm....weird, but interesting. -Yeah, Where is the hood scoop?!?!?!
hope that it will be at the Portland auto show. but i doubt it.

The SS Concept will also appear at St. Louis, Chicago, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and New York.

Keep one thing in mind....the SS Concept is NOT a Camaro replacement. It is a concept car of what COULD be an SS in the future in terms of an SS sedan. Is it radical? You Betcha! Will you like it? I'd strongly urge you to reserve judgement until you see it in person.
Brings to mind the summer of 1997....I drove a 1998 Pilot Z28 to the ICC Camaro show in the Poconos. --- put it on display right in front of the Hotel lobby. There was a very tall guy that had just seen a picture of the 1998 Camaro in a magazine....he nearly bowled people over to try to get to me to tell me "that damn thing looks like a CATFISH!!! YOu call that a CAMARO???????" Funny thing: that fellow -- Andy -- has bought 3 new Camaros since 1998.......
One other thing....regardless of what you heard, there will not be a 5th gen on display at Chicago.
Now...if I can just get the SS concept to Bowling Green in the fall...........................
