just had Mobil 1 changed at the dealer (GMC/Pontiac/totota)I have been dealing with for years and had a Heart Attack . $70 for the service on the Pontiac side. Well with my nice Vergin tounge they got an email ."ARE YOU F'N NUTS" I told them .Pushed through 12 trucks in 10 years and hafve a 2500HD to go through in October.
Called the sales peson who I have been dealing with and told hin "HEADS UP" The truck will be going through him and I have talked to the GMC service side and they will change the oil for under $10 (I will bring in the oil and filter) for me.

Unfortunately some Dealerships do charge quite a bit for an oil change Ed. The Oil change costs so much and then the hourly rate even though you more than likely weren't there that long.
I prefer to do it myself this way I know that all the work including lubrication is done. In the past I have let other places do it including Dealerships and they didn't do the job they could have. Just my personal overview. Glad you gave them an earful with your email............and maybe an eyeful too.......LOL.

Before I got my Camaro, our dealership charged a flat $30 rate for oil/lube. When I took my SS in for the first time and asked for Mobil 1, it would cost $60-$70 But oh well, I know it's getting done right. They use Quaker State at that dealer, YUCK! I dont have teh jacks or stands to do it myself. Maybe someday. I'll bring in my own Mobil 1 next time since it will be prolly be cheaper.

Talked to theservice people on the truck side and they said if I brought in my own stuff they would chance it for about $10 .
$23 for Mobil 1 at sams club (6 pak) ($5 more a wall mart g0 figure), about $5 for a filter, and the $10 to change it under $40 not a bad price and I don't even get dirty

I take my mobil 1 to my dealer, they provide the labor and the filter. $20 is what they charge me.

I do mine myself...I would not trust the California dealers to actually change the oil...let alone use the oil and filter I bring in. Service here sucks eggs.
Can usually find Mobil 1 on sale at Target every month or so for $3.39 a quart, thats about $25 for oil and a 5$ filter.
I like to clean under my car while I wait for the oil to drain.

I can understand about the warranty Ed and respect you for taking it to the Dealership for the service.
I just don't feel right about others touching my vehicles other than my Brother and myself. This way if anything happens I just get mad at myself........LOL.

I DO NOT TAKE MY CARS TO THE DEALER FOR OIL CHANGES. THE FIRST AND LAST TIME I DID IT COST ME AN ARM AND A LEG. IT COST ME $50 FOR THE OIL CHANGE AND ANOTHER THEY STOLE $1500.00 IN CASH (COMPANY MONEY)OUT OF MY BRIEFCASE. IT IS SO UNFORTUNATE THAT I COULD NOT PROVE THAT THEY TOOK IT. HAD TO PAY THE COMPANY BACK THEIR MONEY. SO, ALL TOGETHER A SIMPLE OIL CHANGE COST ME $1,550.00.

Oh man what a price to pay Leadfut. I am sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. The General Manager should have had everyone working there that day investigated by the Police and subjected to a polygraph test although this test can be manipulated still you shouldn't have had to repay what you didn't take. Changing your own oil, or taking it to a quickie oil change place, or an independent shop, does NOT affect the warranty.
If you do it yourself and save receipts, keep a log, etc....there shouldn't be any problem if a warranty issue arises.

You guys going to the dealer are gutsy... the thought of a dealer monkey touching the door handle on the car makes me cringe. I have real warrranty issues (the usual stuff: fading bowties on wheel caps; s l o w power passenger side window; warped brake pads) and I refuse to have them fix it. I'll fix it if it needs fixing. Don't fool yourself, you can fix it too. It ain't rocket science.

Glad things worked out for you Ed. That price was very steep for an oil change.

$72/hr labor rate at my dealers, even for low tech stuff like changing the oil! They did the oil, changed the trans and rear fluid, and rotated the tires for $172, all while I waited in the dealership. The mechanic told me when the car was done, "Did you know that you were missing a lug nut cover?" I had just checked all the wheels and tires while the car was in there lot! I had also spent an hour or so cleaning the wheels the day before. In short, I later sent them the link to the slp post about replacing lost lug nut covers under warranty and they gave me 5 new ones.

Took mine in today, Mobil 1 and ssynth oil filter 52 dollars.
If I did it myself mobil oil 25 dollars at costco ( 6 qts ) and a filter 8 bucks total 32 dollars.

I change my own for several reasons:
1.) Done right a. Engine warm enough for the oil to flow out. b. Allow plenty of time for all the oil to drain c. Inspect the drain plug for any signs of trouble or contamination d. Clean the area around the oil filter and the gasket surface. e. Fill the new filter with oil to speed the oil pressure build up, put a light film of fresh oil on the gasket, and tighten about 3/4 turn after the seal contacts - do not overtighten. f. Take care not cross thread or over tighten the drain bolt. g. Use a funnel to refill the fresh oil, avoid spills. h. pull the PCM/BAT fuse and crank the starter for about 5 seconds 2 to 3 times, on the third time the oil pressur will go up and the light will go out, replace the fuse and start her her up.
2. A good time to inspect the underside.
a. Inspect bushings, check for any leaks, etc. b. Bring a can of silicone and WD-40 under with you. Spray the metal parts with WD 40 and wipe them down (assuming you have not painted and zaino'd the underside - this probably excludes steve2000SS). c. Spray the rubber bushings with silicone d. Wipe down and or clean any dirt, grime, etc.
3. Check fluids, belts, general engine compartment inspection.
4. A good time to service the body
a. Use white lithium grease on door hinges and rollers, deck lid hinges, hood catch and release. b. Spray WD 40 using the plastic tube on hard to reach hinges etc. c. Spray silicone on door and trunk seals - wipe them down after a minute or two to remove any excess.
5. Update the records
a. Fill out the owners manual service record. b. Save your receipts - staple the oil and filter receipt to the page or keep a separate sheet of paper with the receipts stapled to it with the manual
6. No worries about lift damage to fenders, etc.

Scary... Daddy and I think exactly alike. I bet we could compete and get the times below thirty minutes, not that we would WANT to rush it.
I'm the kind of guy that will pull over on the shoulder and change the oil if it has been 3000.1 miles since the last change... well, almost. Even when I don't have much time to change the oil in one of the cars, I find myself puttering around looking for things to lube/clean/maintain.
I just changed the oil in my old '86 Camaro for the 65th time... and the last time (for sale). Talk about doing it in my sleep...
