When i was picking my SS up from the dealer the other day, one of the tech's said,
"wow, that is a nice car, what kind of engine is under the hood?"
i said,
"uh, it is stock, it has the LS1."
he said,
"wow, that sounds cool."
i was thinking, man that is scary when a Chevrolet tech does not know what type of engine a camaro SS has. heck, even the head servicemen in the office thought that the SS had a special higher performance engine than other camaros. i said, no, it is the same engine as the Z28. they had a blank look on their faces.

Are you going to Suburban Chevy? They have always done the right thing for me. Seem to know their stuff better than most.

I have gotten a few of those places out here in southern california. Very frustrating when the product is not know by the people who work there.

no, i went to Wentworth on Grand Ave. Suburban is too far for me to drive, because i cant take time off from work. Wentworth is less than a mile from my house. Suburban is usually pretty good, but they could not find nor try to fix the engine ticking problem i have. at least Wentworth was willing to look for the problem and have tried a couple of things to fix it. right now they are wanting to perform an oil comsuption test, because my car was 2 qt. low. i'm thinking it was due to them because they replaced a cracked oil sending unit o-ring, and they said that they added some oil that came out due to that procedure, but i don't think that they did.

I had a similar discussion with a pre-'98 (LT1) Z28 owner at the Friday Night Cruise last week. The guy said the only difference between his Z28 and the '01 SS we were standing next to was a "chip". His wife used to have a '97 Anniversary Z28 and they were now driving a '94-'96ish Z28. She told me how much she missed her '97 and we chatted about SS's awhile.
All the while, the husband kept telling me he could put on a hood and spoiler and make the Z28 an SS. I told him he wouldn't have the RPO for an SS, or the suspension, exhaust, etc., and wouldn't be an SS, even though it might look similar to one. The wife kept nodding in agreement with me.
He just kept saying the SS had a "chip" and if he added that he'd have an SS. I couldn't help myself....I HAD to educate him.
I went through the whole '93-'97 V8 is an LT1, the '98-'02 V8 is an LS1 routine. He kept saying I was wrong. The only difference was a "chip". I told him the cars don't have "chips" these days.
I told him that the difference was not a "chip", but a completely different engine. I explained that he had an LT1 in his car and there is an LS1 in the '98 and newer Z28 and SS. His wife told him that I knew what I was talking about and not to argue w/me.
He insisted I was full of it until I raised the hood of the '01 and pointed out the LS1 intake and airbox location on the LS1 versus his LT1. I asked him if his engine looked like this one. He just shook his head, turned away, said "Oh," and told his wife to get in the car. She smiled and waved to me as he sulked and drove off.

SHE DA WOMAN!!!!! Posted by Carrie (Member # 1947) on :
I feel your pain, trust me. Try being female and having an air lid on my car and a dealer (serivce mgr and mechanic) say it's heavily modified and didn't want to work on it. They also knew nothing about the LS1. I also had to educate him about the motor.
I need a new CAT on my car when I get it back from the body shop (hopefully next week) I'm so afraid that they are gonna scratch her or even jack it up wrong. So I have a deal going on so I can have my brother-in-law change it (works for a Jeep dealer that also has a Chevy dealership.) I know he will be extra carefull with it. I hope it goes thru. We will see.
Amazing how all of us have had a hard time with GM dealerships. The horror stories. I've had bad dealing with atleast 4 dealerships. I blew my speakers a number of times.

3 for me. both are too many. the dealer should make the customer feel welcome and happy when they come and go. Posted by ss_rs_z (Member # 1888) on :
3 for me as well. You would think the dealerships would go out of their way to treat you and your vehicle right. I complained to Chevrolet but all I got back was that they have no control over it. The dealerships are independent of them and there was nothing they could do. This is why I try to service my vehicle myself or with my Brothers help as he is a licensed mechanic.

Why would they, there are huge #s of brand loyal people on these boards who swear by GM and will NEVER EVER drive a FORD or an Import.
The new GTO is a fine example of this,it is not my idea of what it [GTO] should be,[a rebadged import] but there are hoards of people that see it as the second coming.
As long as people think this way there is no reason for the dealers to become competent.
Posted by ss_rs_z (Member # 1888) on :
Very true about the brand loyalty TimeLord but by treating people right and servicing their vehicle in a timely and respectable way the hoards of others that left for imports or other manufacturers would come back.
They should have a say with the dealers about complaints of treatment whether good or bad. If its good then they would be rewarded, if its bad then a reprimand.
GM is complaining of falling market share, well I believe its time for them to step up to the plate like they have with quality as that has risen dramatically, and address the service complaints.
Just my 2 cents but I think in the long run old customers would come back.

I've a dealership story for you and this is coming from a guy that used to work as a mechanic at a Chevy dealership. I took my 96 Impala SS in to have a engine oil cooler line replaced. It was rubbing on the steering box and I wanted it replaced. Didn't want to have to buy a new line so I decided to let the dealer to it on warranty. About 2 hours after I dropped the car off I get a call from the service writer. He said that the mechanic didn't understand which line that I wanted replaced, that he says the Impala doesn't have a engine oil cooler. Told him the line next to the steering box, the one that has the rub marks on it. He still can't find it so at noon I take off and go to the dealership to show the mechanic which lines are engine oil cooler lines. Show them to him, explain how the cooler works, etc. and he finally puts my new oil line on. Don't know where they find these guys.
