It's official. The SS is in drydocks. After reading all about Diggler losing his car on worn out tires and a surprise cloudburst and after fighting for the last month just to keep air in my worn out F1s long enough to drive it to town and back, I've pulled the ZR1s and what's left of the F1s off the car. I need to get the tires off the ZR1s and then I'd like to take the wheels to guy that chroned my CME tips and see if he can polish out some of the scratches that have appeared on the edges!! [Mad]

Well here she (sorry Scott "HE") is waiting for refitment so we can tour again. [Smile]

On the stands

F1s + 18,000 miles

I've got 27k+ on the rears and they're up for replacement within the next few thousand. I just had the fronts replaced at 26k. I'm still waiting for my rears to get here. [Frown]

I might just order from tire rack.

27K [Eek!] [Eek!]

Man I was lucky to squeak 18k out of my F1s [Roll Eyes]

I got 12k off of mine! [Eek!] and they were bald. Unfortunatley...i wasn't wise, and drove my car in the rain and slid off the road at a turn. [Frown] Was going on a rear ago. But hey! that's why i have my Loud mouth now [Big Grin]

You did the right thing!

Your's were bald, look closely at the F1 picture. It's hard to see, but if you look close you can the rubber delaminating and where chunks of rubber are missing...the right thing was about two months ago!!!! To drive it any more would be just plain stupid. [Eek!]

Mike put my first set of KD's on at 7,000, replacing the Goodyears. I replaced them at 44,000, and I still have them bvecause there's enough tread on them to take to the track. For my money, the KD's are the BEST.

KDs $267 each at Tirerack...that's $90 each more than KDWs. How much diff is there with the KDs vs. KDWs?

I'm looking at the Kuhmo ECSTA MXs

 -

I've seen a lot of them around the autocross course and people seem real happy with them [Smile]

Oh yeah, the Kuhmos are $147 each. I can get them mounted and balanced for a total of about $640.

Since I can't drive it...

I waxed it! [Big Grin]

Actually I restored the finish!!!

I went to do something and I rubbed against the paint. I felt something like sand on it, but it was stuck to the paint. I started inspecting the car and it was all over! [Eek!] Must have been tree gunk or seomthing. I needed sonmething more aggrsive than just Z2 and I still had the three step Meguiars stuff from doing the 57 soooooooo, I started in.

The 123 coats of Zaino paid off cuz the tree stuff came right off with the Meguiars cleaner. I followed up with the polish and then the Carnuba wax. Four hours later and she looks beautiful.

pictures to follow

If yours is a daily driver and you drive it in the rain..i wouldnt suggest the KD's...rather, go with the KDW's or Firehawk SZ50EP's. They are the best two int he rain. I have the firehawks and I can pretty much drive my SS in the rain like it was dry out (They also are excellent in the dry..far faaaar better than the stock F1's). Something to think about. [Smile]

I'm running the new Goodyear F1 GS D3 's and LOVE them!

I ran the Firestone SZ50's before and these top them....that and they have one of the coolest websites you'll ever see......

I raced on them at the NFME event at IRP and they did great! Rain stability is top notch too.

No rain for me. My car's a fair weather ride. [Wink]

The washer fluid bottle is still full from the factory. [Big Grin]

Took the two wheels that are scratched to the tire shop today to get the tires dismounted. Next I'll take em up the the chrome shop and see if they can be polished up?

I have 27k+ on my original F1's too. the drivers side is getting completely bald on the outer edge, but not so much on the passenger side.

SSheets, did you experience this? i think my allignment is a little bit out of whack.

i'm also looking at the KDW's.

My original F1's have just at 20,000 on them, and I'd say they still have 80-85%+ of their usable tread left. The back wears lots better than the front. I need to rotate them again.

I must not drive hard enough. [Smile]

Posted by SSHEETS (Member # 1989) on :

Nate, if you corner hard you will wear the outer edges. There's no way around it. I had mine dismouted and remouted left to right so I could maintain direction, but swap sides. This helped get me an extra couple thousand miles out of them.

Oh Orange one...you drive way toooooooo slow.

I felt lucky to get 18,000 miles. I live around a lot of mountains and I like to take the car autocrossing occaisoinaly.

Aoverall, I was pretty happy with the way the F1s wore out evenly. I keep a close eye on air pressure.

Mine will go this winter. Just under 10,000. This is not do to the tire shredding burnouts that would be so much fun, but the mountains of western NC. Our tires and breaks don't last long. KDW's will be mounted before she comes back out in the spring.

SSHEETS.........do not git the Kuhmos....!!!!!!!

I have those exact tires that you showed pics of. The cornering sucks.....no where near as stiff of a sidewall as my old ones.

I got 'em about 4 months ago and they do not even compare to my Firehawks that I got 30,000+ miles out of.

The front 2 have feathered out to where it sounds like a monster truck at low speeds and coming to a stop.

I have called Kuhmo and Tirerack and they both told me I was SOL.

I will be putting Firehawks back on within the next year.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

[Wink]
