Ok, so I just bought a new 19" LCD monitor and my current Gainward GF4 Ti4200 doens't have a DVI output, and would like the best picture quality for my PC since I watch dvd's on it as well as play games.
I'm not rich, but I want something that is as equally as nice as my current card. Just want some inputs on the.
Someone stated that I would need at least the FX 5600 Ultra or the ATI 9600 Pro to compare to what I currently have. But those go for over $175. I'd like something less than 150.

Dan. ATI all the way in my book. And you can get a Radeon 9600 Pro 128 mb for less then $150 via Pricewatch.
I've got a 20 inch Sony x202 LCD hooked up DVI to my ATI AIW 9700 Pro. I use it for DVD's and TV and it looks sweet.

Yeah..I usually check pricewatch. Been looking at reviews and in some instances the 4200 still outperforms the 5600 ultra. Guess it depends on the application. Above both of those is teh ATI 9500 Pro..but cant seem to get a good price...well... I did find it for $160, but dunno if it's worth it. Was always a follower of the GeForce chipsets, but might just change. I do already have the ATI remote wonder, as well as the TV tuner on my pc
EDIT: Anyone know if the 9500/9600 cards are DirectX 9 compatible?

i have the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB and like it VERY much. it is a bit pricy, but well worth it in my book.. I do a lot of gaming as well..

Above my means as of right now..since I just bought a monitor and need to buy a new burner as well. Maybe I'll live with the analog for a few months and buy a nicer card like the FX5900 (yeah right)

The Radeon 9600 is DX9 compatible.
I'm actually considering getting rid of my AIW 9700 and picking up the new AIW 9600 for it's extra multimedia features (radio, Remote II, etc). The only problem is that unlike the normal 9600's the AIW 9600 has no DVI interface. Posted by JeffY (Member # 120) on :
Get the latest " Computer Shopper" magazine- they have a very good summary about all of the boards that are out and in all of the price ranges. Usaully, mags only go for the high end, but this story covers all rangers, both Nvidias and ATI stuff and oof brands as well.

dont get too hung up about DVI.
YPrPb connection will give you just as good a picture. DVI is more about copyright protection than anything else.

That's funny. I have a GeForce4 TI4200 and it has DVI and TV-out.
Have it on my 20.1" LCD running the DVI for the new machine and the D-sub for the old. I have no problems, but don't really watch a lot of DVD's.

Yah know..every single 4200 i see now has the DVI!!! Is yours the 8x version? Mine is only the 4x 128mb version

Actually mine is only 64MB. It's almost a year old.
Maybe it wouldn't do that well with DVD's? I've only tried one.

WOWIE!! I got my monitor in the mail today...and it blows me away! I'm definitely in no hurry to get a new card until this monitor settles in. Thanks for the advice all..I will defintiely have a new video card in the next month or two
Oh, also, I agree with any of the Radeon 9xxx's...they're great cards. Lots of good reviews. I stopped gaming though, and am totally satsified with my 4200.
Also, if you are going to get a cd or dvd burner, wait until you see a deal (ie, free cd burners, or dvd burners for cheap). The best way to find these deals is to look at the Hot Deals forum at anandtech, or better yet, check out the forums at fatwallet.com.

I dont know why mine dind't come with the DVI. I guess i didn't need it at the time *slaps head* adn figured i'd save a few bucks. The 4200 is really a great card. My computer can only be modded so much more, hehe.
Oh and I just bought the fastest burner out last night! And it's a Lite On brand as well. 52X32X52!!

My brother (a computer wiz) told me that you want my Video card. GF4 4200 Daytona card. pretty much the same card as what you have but with the DVI outputs. for a card for 150.00 or less, it will probably have to be a 4200 or lower. he also told me that it is hard to find a new card that does not have those outputs.

I hope you didn't spend too much on that LiteOn....Best buy just had a deal with it going for $9.99 after rebates.....
I jumped on a deal like that a while ago (last year), got a memorex 40x12x48 burner which I flashed (overclocked, hehe) to a LiteOn 48x12x48 for $20. I figure that it's working well and I don't need a 52x burner at this point, but for $10, why not????
But, what I need now, is money to mod my car! There just ain't enough cool $10 mods available!

I find the text sharper with the DVI output on mine. Looks just as good as any laptop. ATI cards have better color and picture quality when compared side by side to nvidia, which if your watching DVD's makes all the difference.
