going to the track is really starting to get expensive.
That's a HRP rule only.

Getting busted for street racing is not cheap. Posted by helloween (Member # 1506) on :
They told me not to come back until i had a role bar. Rediculous i pulled out the rule book and made some calls. It seams some one wanted to make there own rules that night. That was here in Houston. I don't think anyone has a problem since then.

It was not a one night thing. People are being consistantly asked to only run 1/8th or leave.
Madman & Co. Racing got ahold of an NHRA official. Official word from NHRA:
quote: OK guys here is the straight scoop from Danny Gracia(NHRA safety rules maker).
ALL T_TOP cars are considered open cockpits. Any thing faster than 13.99 will need a rollbar and faster than 10.99 will need a full cage.
The new rules came into effect in June and the revision for the rulebook will be printed in the National Dragster.
Also per NHRA if you have a roll bar you MUST have 5pt harnesses, stock seat belts arent legal.
Looks like HRP is the 1st to enforce the rule, but it might just be a matter of time... Posted by biSScuit (Member # 2030) on :
If you can't afford to take it to the track, you can't afford to race IMO. I know (hope) that nobody is trying to justify street races, but I thought I'd throw my .02 in.

Remember, NHRA rules are a minimum. A track can always further regulate what's required and what isn't. To me, this just means that Hallsville will get busier, and there will be some more street racing.
Unfortunatly, not all people are smart enough to realize that going 140 on a public road is stupid.

I'm not advocating running without safety equipment mind you, I'm just passing on the article... flame on.
Excerpt from the full article
quote:"...Forsaking generally accepted speed-junkie logic, which dictates that cars in this performance stratum be approximately as comfortable as a barium enema, Thames' chose to preserve virtually all of the TA's factory-installed luxury spiffs, right down to the HVAC system, Monsoon audio rig, and a multiplicity of power assists. (He has, however, yanked the back seat since our photo shoot.) Safety equipment? Yeah, there's some of that.
"I run at RCR [River City Raceway], which is an IHRA track," explains Thames. "I'm really not consistent enough yet to run at a bigger track. Besides, if I added a roll cage it wouldn't really be a street car anymore."
But isn't there at least some sort of tech-in process?
"Yeah, of course. They say, 'You got a helmet?' That's pretty much it."
Kind of sounds like our job interview."

Its not about affording a roll bar/cage its about wanting in the car. Some people drive their cars everyday and dont want to climb over a stupid bar. Some people need the back seats. I have a Q for you why is it that if I run 13.9 I need a roll bar and a cage if faster BUT the bikes I see up there runnung 11s 10s 9s only need a helmet and leathers and maybe a wheelie bar???
Posted by TimeLord (Member # 1389) on :
Because you fall off a bike and the leathers make you slide out of harms way[hopefully]!! The bikes can run way faster on the street than the speeds they hit at the track. They have a kill strap for the ignition in case of a fall. I am not crazy about putting in a roll bar because I use my car daily and the back seat often. If I hit 11.99 I will have no choice but to install one,I play their game I play by their rules. The rule does not exist[yet] and may never exist in the future,if it does people will have a choice to make. But streetracing isn't one of them,,,,

OK you nutso's
here is the official word
quote:For a thread over on www.superstockforum.com where you have to use your REAL name. NHRA posted this to clarify the rumormill...I've been interested in it to as I may have other reasons one of these days to change to a 10-pt, but not just yet.
Clarification on T-Top Rule
The NHRA Technical service department has fielded numerous questions, concerns, and opinions about a rule change that has been circling through Internet chat rooms and local tracks concerning T-Top design vehicles for the 2004 season. No rule change is being implemented for T-Top design vehicles. A roll bar will be mandatory in all cars, including T-Tops, which run 11.00 to 11.99. A roll cage is required on all vehicles 10.99 and quicker.
"This rumored change is false," said John Miller, Senior Technical Communication Specialists. "As a technical staff, we have reviewed the subject and do not see a need to change the classification of a T-Top vehicle from following the same guidelines as a hardtop to that of a convertible design."

It amazes me that some guys will spend that kind of cake for a motor, tires, etc. and then complain about adding safety equipment in the car. Those guys don't need to worry about the Check Engine light, they need to worry about the Check Ego light. Nobody likes climbing over door bars but if you spend the little extra to have a cage custom fit to your car, they can be made quite comfortable even for a daily driver and still meet the rules.
I can't imagine what the liability insurance for a track is. Sad reality, regardless of what we think, if they say your not running without it, your not running. But there is no justification what-so-ever for racing on the street.

The problem is at HRP, and rumored to be coming to all NHRA tracks, T-Top cars faster than 13.99 will be outlawed. So with a stock Fbody you will not be able to run. It's not about dumping a bunch of money into Motor, tires, etc. It's about outlawing stock cars. An extension of this might be was GM negligent for building a 13 sec car without a roll bar?

I agree 100%
