about 18 months ago replaced the battery with
a Sears Die Hard - their best series.

did about 80 miles of Interstate driving on
Saturday, went to start the SS on Thursday night
and it was dead! Got it boosted, could find
nothing on - although I think the power saver
feature would have shut down any draw. Just
went into the garage and it fired right up.

Last night I did a little driving in the city
only. I figured that I'd have to replace the
battery this weekend. But now it seems o.k.

Any ideas what could have drained it? Or is it
just a weak battery that can no longer hold
a charge?

No way a battery should be dead after 18 months. Step # 1 take of the leads and clean. I assume your voltmeter showed a proper charge?

Could of been a bad battery, a cell may of died. did you check the charging system?

friend bought a battery and a week later it was dead, battery was bad.

Sounds like a loose connection. Did the alt gage show a charge? When it was "dead", was everything dead-no lights, no nothing? Was the VATS chip clean?

Yes, but usually a bad cell stays bad. This sounds connection oriented - leads, fuses, connectors, VATS (whatever that is [Big Grin] ).

connections were tight, clean, did all the usual
checks, voltmeter was normal after starting.

I think I'll take the battery back to Sears and
let them test it under load. That's the only
thing I could think of.

Just a thought. Could there be a closed circuit keeping something energized after you shut the car off & causing the battery to drain, e.g. one of your mod's - strobes or power antenna?

You may be on to something, after 4 days it's dead but after 1 it's OK?

I'm letting it sit till tomorrow a.m. If it's
goes dead again then it's coming out! I'll check
with amp meter to see if there's a draw on it.

Take your car to any Sears. Since the battery is still under warranty they will do a full charging system check for free.

Went to Sears - very nice young technician,
complete systems check - everything is o.k.

Battery is good, alternater putting out 71 amps
[Eek!] no draw - at off position battery was
discharging .2 amps, probably just the clock and
the ABS.

Everything was clean and tight. Just a mystery
I guess.
