I'm wondering if any F-Body enthusiasts are planning to purchase the new Pontiac GTO when it becomes available.

Wondering what is our "next step" myself....

...maybe the 2005 model...

not in '04... but depending on money.... who knows... maybe '06.... but I will definitely wait to see a "Judge" type upgrade.

The current 04 GTO is screaming for hoodscoops.

I'm a bit "financially challenged" at the moment, but it's on my short list for the future.

[Myrtle]It sucks: it looks like a Cavalier![/Myrtle]

Might make a nice daily driver down the road, but I'll wait a year or two for them to shake the bugs out. And drop the price. (Yeah, I know, not likely!)

N O P E......maybe a Mustang.......or maybe I will have to go with an import like a 350Z.

I had a deposit down on one until about a month ago. I fell in love with it when I was working with Holden in AU. But unfortunately, they aren't offering the GM employee discount, so I got out.
There are some minor improvements slated for next year, but I'm holding out for the C6.

Couldn't get one if I wanted one. Not available in Canada. Luckily, I am not in the market for a car for a while yet. Sigh!! [Frown]

Nope.

We'll be holding out for the new Cobra in '06. Goes fast, and looks fast. Can't wait! [Big Grin]

I'm spending so much money on this Z28 that I could have bought one...i added up the total so far...Ouch...And it still is getting a complete repaint in the next week or so...(hail damaged hood getting replaced, so I decided to do the whole thing, since GM doesn't make my paint anymore.)

I have spent more on this car in restoration(basically what this amounts to, new drivetrain, new paint, new interior) than I did on the purchase price of any car I have owned. Hell, even than my parent's have owned.

Didn't I read somewhere that they're only going to be available in the big markets, Texas and California? Or am I behind the times?

One of the few things I don't miss about Texas is the guys at work telling me hail was coming with every storm, `cause they knew I used to freak out about my car.

No kidding, hail is the worst weather phenomenon we have here, because the damn insurance companies will never give you enough to fix it. That's whay i want to go with an SS-style hood, made of fiberglass, not another metal Z28 hood. Plus, I really don't like the LT1 fake heat extractors, too. [Big Grin]

Except you forgot the "GM sucks" part. [Wink]

It may be fast...but it has no style/character.

I do not know what is worse the Cavalier, um err, I mean GTO or GM pitiful attempt to cover the plain appearance by removing the 2-door model from the grand prix line-up the past couple of years in preparation of the GTO's re-appearance ... and expecting US CAR BUYERS to not even notice ... unbelievable [Eek!]

imagine if Pontiac still had the 2-door Grand Prix still available when the GTO came out... no one could tell teh difference... especially GM marketing dept [Roll Eyes]

besides I'll wait for a few years... GM rushed the GTO to US production in the vacuum created by teh demise of the F-body..i If its like first models out by car manufacturers in the past... I predict the first couple of Model Year GTO's will be plagued by gremlins/unexplainable rattles and etc...

so I'd wait a few years to ensure, I'd not be buying "a polished lemon"

If I like it when I see it first hand, possibly an '05 or '06...

Posted by Bonequark (Member # 1923) on :

The only reason I'm considering the (2004) first year is that the actual car has been bolted together by Holden for some time now. I suspect it will not fall victim to firsy year jitters that GM is known so well for.

Plus, Callaway in Old Lyme, CT knows this car very well.

GTO's look like a Beemer to me. Might be quick, but look like, well, crap. But that's my own opinion. GM better come up with something other than an "imported" GTO if they want to lure the performance crowd away from the soon to be out new gen Mustang. That sucker looks bas a** and if it runs as good as it looks, well, too bad, GM, after all these years I may have to jump ship. Unless I opt for a 'vette. Invariably, GM will do what it always has done: come in a day late and a dollar short. If they got something to entice the muscle crowd from NOT buying another brand, then they best be touting what's coming NOW instead of waiting to surprise us after we've already bought Mustangs. They do it every time. Waiting around makes it seem like they don't have anything up their sleeve. Heck, they've been spouting off about the SSR for over 2 years now and I've yet to see one at the showroom. So if that's any indication, it will be the MINIMUM of 2006 or 07 before we see any sort of cool stuff from GM, if at all.

The "truck" thing is going to peter out in a few years, and GM is only worried about the "now". People will get the kids outta the house and then want some sort of performance vehicle they've always dreamed of. And there's Ford, waiting for them. GM? Holding the bag. They'll soon get the fact that second place is just a first place loser.

Of course you can disagree, that's why they call them opinions. From those pics, I rest my case, it still looks a lot like a jellybean to me, so my GTO/BMW look-alike opinion stands. Heck, even a stepped on dog turd in the right light can look mean. The beemer looks more like one of those RC cars in larger scale. On the side shot, I swear if you pushed the front tires back a bit, it would look similar to the VW Bug. Not very pleasing to my eyes. Sorry. The front end looks a tad better than the GTO, but the back end on both looks too Honda-esque for me. But again, this is just my viewpoint. Obviously, more than one person likes them because they're making them and the GTO....

From Motor Trend..."2005 Pontiac GTO: High-performance "super" GTO expected with dramatic styling enhancements, including hood scoops."

Looks like The Judge will return in '05.

There was that comment in Automobile mag that SLP was doing a deal with GM on the '04 GTO. I would assume it might entail ram air and styling upgrades.
Anyone hear more?
Andy

Posted by Bonequark (Member # 1923) on :

Andy....I saw the same stuff but couldn't get an answer one way or the other from SLP. It was kind of like..."Let's wait and see what happens".

I took this to mean they were talking with GM, but that nothing was final. For what it's worth. JeffY could probably confirm or deny as need be (smile)

No, not the car for me. I'm am eyeing a ZO6 or a Cobra in the future, probably within the next 2 years. I want to see how the new Vettes look though. I will still be keeping the SS, of course.

MMMM_ERT,

Even though I think BMW's are nice cars, there is no way I would classify that M3 as mean looking! Sporty or quick yes. And it looks like a blast to drive. But NOT mean....a Viper is mean looking, not a yuppie-mobile. [Wink]

Mark,

I thought the same thing until I saw one in
person. They do look meaner in person,
pictures don't do them justice... [Wink]

The fenders are more flared and muscular than
a standard 3-series and the rear fascia is
different too....not to mention the subtle
hood bulge and classy petite spoiler.

Yes..not as mean as a Viper for sure...but
still mean looking. Hell, the WRX STI looks
mean to me. [Big Grin]

[Big Grin] LOL.

Every time I see a Subaru, I always think of Paul Hogan, Crocodile Dundee, driving around the Outback in those old commercials. NOT mean at all! (no offense Steven) [Wink]

Update. I found this article on Pontiac's GTO on Autoweeks web site.....

..."Retro is a no go Kraut says declining sales of the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Volkswagen New Beetle and Ford Thunderbird caused GM brass to opt for a clean, conservative appearance for the GTO. There also were time constraints. The new look, he says, is an effort to avoid having the car labeled retro.

But that leaves "a space big enough to drive a truck through" for SLP Engineering, the Tom's River, N.J., company that created and built the Firebird Firehawk and Camaro SS.

SLP Marketing Director Reg Harris confirms that SLP will offer an appearance and performance package for the 2004 GTO that addresses the concerns voiced by fans of the car.

Harris says SLP's version of the GTO will have hood scoops, special performance-tuned exhaust and other upgrades. The company expects to market the package this summer.

"We are not at a point where we can provide much detail, but I can tell you that the SLP GTO package will be consistent with the car's heritage," Harris says. The hood scoop, he says, will be a new design.

There is one aspect of the GTO where Kraut says Pontiac has been faithful to the car's heritage: Stuffing a big engine in a mid-sized car is exactly what renegade GM engineers did 40 years ago."

Something must have happened if this agreement fell through.
