You can't believe how bad they are.......and this comes from a guy who thought he had seen the worst in Northeastern Ohio! I spent most of my life in Cleveland and I thought they had bad roads especially from the bad winters.....but their roads are MUCH better than the ones down here.
In greater Charlotte, our potholes have potholes!!!!!!!! Within two years of paving a road, they have potholes! The Interstates are the exception (they aren't too bad) but almost every other paved road is lousy, and that's being kind! And when they do patch them they do a miserable job on top of everything else. On one of our main roads, there is a pothole that has opened up 6 times since April.........I know since I called the State Highway people on this all six times. That's just one example. My SS rides like a tank on these roads and I am sick of hearing stones and dirt hit my car as I try and avoid all the bumps and potholes.
Sorry.....just had to vent.

I doubt Michigan's roads are any worse than Northern Ohio's...........and trust me when I say our roads are worse than Ohio's.

Just gotta get in on this. Having lived in 14 states and having driven in a lot more than that. I would have to give the award for the worst roads to Michigan, hands down they win going away. Pa. is a distance 2nd. PA has some bad roads but they don't even come close to Michigan. Our roads here in the Carolinas may seem bad to us but they are actually pretty good.

The long-distance truckers give an "award" every year to the state with the worst roads. Last year was the first time in over a decade that the award did not go to Pennsylvania. Our roads are lousy,and always have been. Pendot uses winter damage as an excuse, but that doesn't hold up. The other great "benefit" we have in the upstate SC area is the fine dump trucks that can't ever keep their load INSIDE their truck! There is gravel all over the roads...some roads it is hard to tell if they are even PAVED...and do they (or the City, or anyone else) ever stop to CLEAN the roads...heck no.
and of course...large amounts of these lovely gravel stones have met my hood, quarterpanels, etc. The smooth plastic inside my wheel wells feel like sandpaper now, from all the crap bouncing off of them the last two years.

Phooey on that generalization. SC roads do suck in some places, but not everywhere. I've driven in many different parts of the state, and there are good areas and bad areas. Mind you, I'm only talking about the roads that are paved!!!!!
Some Pennsylvania back roads are a bit treacherous though along with their very steep inclines to railroad crossings, but it seems they'll pave right over road pizza, because sometimes the roads are very lumpy for no reason.
Dirt roads? My grandmother lived in Arkansas, out on a farm in the country (ok, what ~isn't~ in the country out in Arkansas?) on unpaved dirt roads with small, river-washed stones all over them. Good Lord, when I was a kid, I remember feeling the pelting of the rocks on the bottom of the floor pans so hard that you couldn't hear anyone talking in the car. And looking out the back window of the big ol' '65 Delta 88 to see nothing but an opaque, orangish dirt cloud for as far as you could see.

Around here I'd actually rather them NOT patch some potholes! I'd rather dodge the ones I know are there than to have tar from one side of the road to the other b/c they can't put it in the hole. I get tar all over my car b/c of this. Then, we have a bump instead of a hole!
Some places are actually good around here, but not too many. One a road in the country where my g/f lives, they actually put gravel on it not long ago (and it was paved! well, that rocky asphalt stuff and not blacktop, but still paved). I refused to drive the SS back down it until all the gravel had finally worked its way off the road.
