Looks like my wife may be getting a big promotion in June which means a move from W.PA to VA (Alexandria area).
Anyone have any idea of ballpark prices for homes within a one hour commute of Alexandria?
Is it true that VA has a personal property tax on vehicles that you have to pay every year???
Any ideas how much my '99 TransAm, her '99 Infiniti I30, 2 Harleys and a Honda motorcycle would be if that's true?
Could you list things that you like and dislike about living in VA?
How are the taxes?
As you may see, this is only preliminary info that I'm trying to gather.
Thanks in advance.

the personal property tax every year is true. I paid over $300 this past June for my 02 SS.

Used to live there, am on the MD side of DC now. The personal property tax varies by county and is based on the book value of the vehicle. You also have to have a yearly "safety inspection" and a yearly county or town sticker.
As for housing prices, the Alexandria area and Northern Va in general is very high. Basically within an hour I think you are either looking at south or west to get more affordable. Kerm can help you out more there, he's in that commute range from there.

I hope it's a Real BIG promotion because where you live now is MUCH cheaper to live. If you have school age children and want to live in N. Virginia, plan on paying up to 40% more for a similar house in a half way decent school district. Md. isn't any better. Two years ago my parents sold an 8 year old townhouse in an OK, mid crime area, about 7 miles from DC. They sold it for over $325,000. Shacks in the same area sell for in excess of $100,000 and the school district is in not too good of shape. If the promotion is in the 6 figures you should be OK. GOOD LUCK,
I hope you don't regret your move.
Did I mention the Traffic??????????

Everything said above about the taxes is true. I've lived in Virginia all my life and, while it is a beautiful place, they find more ways to tax us than you could ever imagine.
The tax on our cars was supposed to be gradually phased out in time, but they don't seem to be in too big a hurry to wipe it out completely.
Oh yeah, keep an eye out for the blue and silver '02 Z28's with a logo on the door. State police here have seven of those cars and from what we've observed, the Camaros are making the state plenty of money.
