My son and I had an invite to join the Alfa Romeo Club of Detroit to an autocross session at Washenaw Community College(same parking lot that Camaro Superfest was held in). He ran his 1994 SS S-10 truck.Man that was too much fun and I want to do it with my SS.I need an extra set of wheels and tires though! The SS truck was the only truck there and making track times almost as good as the 2002 Corvette that was running. You don't need a ton of HP,just a great handling vehicle. The club members kept mentioning how good that truck is for a high center or gravity vehicle even though it is lowered 4" from stock. That ZQ8 suspension really works!I will post some pictures soon.I just rode in my son's truck and did not drive.Cost was only $10.Now I am hooked! That's one of the reasons that B.G. is fun.

Auto X is a blast indeed! [Big Grin]

The KYSCCA puts auto-X events on about every 4 weeks. The next one is at Fort Knox, using their airfield runways for the course. It is great!!!

It does get addicting. [Big Grin]

Tell me about it [Smile]

AutoX is my current motorsport of choice. The Winnipeg Sports Car Club runs about 15 events a year ...plus we have the option of attending regional and national events.

Fun, safe, and relatively easy on the car ...except for the tires. [Roll Eyes]

This Alfa Romeo Club does this around 4 times per year.I asked the Club President if we could do a joint event with the Eastern Michigan Camaro Club and he seemed to believe that we could. All I can say is that I need to get an extra set of tires and wheels for my SS that I can abuse badly! Street tires drop in performance as they age anyway ... just look at John01SS's Bowling Green AutoX times. You may as well "use 'em up" every other year unless you intend to go to R-compounds ...which adds to the fun [Big Grin]

Art,what tire would you recommend for auto x-ing? [Smile]

I don't know what he recommends, but he won
the stock division with my car at B.G. I had
the BFG KD's on, and they stick! [Big Grin]

I'm running Kumho Victoracer V700's right now. They are a very popular choice, and durable enought to drive to and from the track.

At the top level Hoosier's are the tire of choice, but they are more expensive, wear out faster, and are NOT supposed to be driven on the street at all ...not enough "meat" in the tread to deal with normal road debris.

As far as street tires go, I don't think any are even close to R's, but KD's seem to perform pretty well, but fall off quickly with aging/heat cycling. Mine are in their 3rd year and they don't generate a whole lot of grip anymore. I wouldn't pay the premium for them again.

David Berry ... the fellow that set FTD in Bowling Green was on new street tires. I don't recall what they were (but intend to find out before I buy new ones) but he was very impressed with them. He told me why he wasn't on R-compounds, but I don't recall off hand what he said.

To give you an idea how the Kumho's on an Camaro perform vs. other cars take a look at yesterday's results from our autocross. Other than the Honda S2000's that are in a different league, the top pack was relatively close ... I did put a better "fun run" together afterward and got into the 58's.

Hope that helps a little. [Smile]

I remember one of the guys talking about "R" compound tires.Heck you were about as close to that Corvette as my son was against that 2002 Corvette with his truck. His friend brought out a Mustang with a supercharger and only ran slightly quicker than the truck. The funny thing is that he had brand new Nitto 17" street tires on the Mustang and the left front had no tread left on the side where the tread and sidewall meet.I guess to much sliding and way to many right hand turns.
