They were probably Coyotes, we have them in North Jersey. Keep a close eye on your pets with those around.

Gino,
While coyotes look similar to wolves in the face, they are considerably smaller, usually not exceeding 35-40 lbs ................ and have much shorter legs than wolves
Coyotes, by themselves, are extremely timid animals and will usually run from humans .............. even packs will run from a human ................ coyotes are normally not agressive animals, but hunger and strength of numbers can cause them to go beyond their normal bounds and they have been known to attack small domesticated animals
Don't be afraid of them, but do be cautious Posted by Bello SS (Member # 1304) on :

If they are coyotes then definitely keep an eye on your animals. Our neighbor had a beautiful black and white cat, 30 lbs. according to them. A few weeks ago we heard what sounded like a dog or cat fight in the yard, horrible noises at 3 AM. After a while we heard the neighbor walking down the street. Some coyotes got the cat and tore it to shreds. He chased them off and they dropped the cat a little ways down the street, barely alive. Needless to say, it died.
So be careful with your pets! Too bad these coyotes didn't run into our other neighbors' HUGE 150 lb. Rottweiler, Zeus!
