TGIF! TGIF! TGIF! ................ we made it ............. have a great day and a wonderful weekend [Wink] [Wink]

The picture of the day ............. Tulsa, Oklahoma's Steve Carbone .............. this time at the wheel of his own dragster (1970) It was this same car (with canard wings in front of the slicks) that "won" the first major "burndown" in NHRA history

In 1971, Don Garlits was destroying the competition with his new rear-engined Swamp Rat ............. when the US Nationals rolled around Garlits qualified with an outstanding 6.21 ............... Carbone qualified second with a badly trailing 6.39 .............. and these two cars waded through the rest of the field to meet each other in the finals .................. Carbone went to Garlits before the final run and told him that he would not stage first ...................... Garlits, being the SOB that he could be from time to time, decided to challenge Carbone .................. as the two cars began the staging procedure, Carbone immediately lit the pre-stage bulb and Garlits followed............. Carbone then sat, staring straight ahead over the eight zoomie headers belching nitro flames .............. 30 seconds .................. 60 seconds ................. Buster Couch, the NHRA starter began to get concerned and started moving people away from the starting line, for the longer they sat, the hotter they got, and the more explosive the nitro engines became .................... but Buster decided to let them settle this between themselves .................... 90 seconds ................ both showing massive heat waves coming from their engines................ 120 seconds .............. still no movement from Carbone, he just sat there staring straight ahead .............. 140 seconds ............. Garlits finally moved in and lit the stage light ............. Carbone followed immediately ............... Buster triggered the tree ............. the green flashed .............. and Garlits was immediately up in smoke while Carbone motored to the 1971 Top Fuel Championship

Carbone's logic ............. fuel engines love heat ...... to a certain extent ............. Garlits' car had aluminum heads and heated up faster ............ Carbone's car had a significantly larger fuel tank ............. and, as Steve said later ............... The man has to learn that when I tell him I'm not going to stage first, he'd better believe me .......... the youngster had totally psyched out the old man and the slower of the two cars was the champion [Cool] [Cool] [Cool]

You had to admire those guys for having the guts to have that much engine and horsepower sitting between their legs.
