There is a group of men and women that I believe we can never thank enough, or repay them for what they've done for each of us.
We're celebrating Veterans Day......and I received the following from my friend, Mary Frazee Patterson, and had to send it on. I hope you'll share it with your friends and family.......and please.....take the time to thank a veteran for what he/she's done to keep us in a free country.
An aside: I never knew my Grandfather Settlemire. You see, he died of the effects of mustard gas from world war one. It took several years for the gas to slowly and painfully kill him and he died in 1926.
My Grandmother Settlemire was close to death this past summer. She was 101 years old. As she lay dying, she asked: "I wonder if Grant will even recognize me when I get to heaven....I'm an old lady....and he's still a young man." I swear, it hit me like a brick wall as to the sacrifice this one man made....and how it affected someone for nearly 80 years. Shame on me that it took this long for me to realize what a huge sacrifice this was.
That's just one of millions of stories.
So....take time this week to thank every man and woman you know that served our country.
If you are a veteran, let me say this: From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for all you have sacrificed to give us freedom....and I don't think any of us can ever repay you for that sacrifice. You are truly a hero.
Scott
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag,
and who serves under the Flag,
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.
I don't know if you saw this on the news but it really impressed me. Funny, our US Senate/House took 2 days off as they couldn't work.
On the ABC evening news, it was reported that, because of the dangers from Hurricane Isabelle approaching Washington DC, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.
They refused. "No way, Sir!"
Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson.
The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
I don't usually suggest that many emails be forwarded, but I'd be DAMN proud if this one reached as many as possible.
We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve.
God Bless them.
Mary

Couldn't have been spoken any better Scott.
Thank You all who have served, those who have fought, and to those that gave their lives so all of us could be free today. Posted by MaryandRalph (Member # 244) on :
From one veteran to all the rest, be proud, be humble.

There are no words appropriate for those who commit to making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
