The car is an 02 SS with the T56. I should be in the 400-420rwhp range when I'm done with the mods. I'm not a 1320 guy. I plan on street, highway and an occiasional Solo II event. Who has experiance with the different ratios? I'm looking for all around performance.
All advice welcome:D

I've got 4.10's in the SS. Luv 'em for the street and dragstrip.
That having been said, I'm going with 3.73's for the Zed. It will be setup as a purpose built autoX (solo2) car and ultimately I too am looking to be putting 400+ HP to the rear wheels.
Couple of reasons I'm going that way 1. Our usual autoX venue has a section that is often used as a straight ...and I end up in the rev limiter in 2nd, but there's really not enought time or room to do the 2-3 shift and then scrub the speed and do a 3-2 shift before turning ... 2. I'll be using a Torsen T2R diff, and won't need to mess around with the paddle kit and stuff.

If you were to eliminate the Solo II from the equation which gear would you choose?
I only go to Solo IIs once or twice a year. I'm not trying to be competitive, just flinging the car around without worrying about getting arrested!
Like I said, I'm really just looking for all around performance...all around town, all around the mountains and all around any mustang I might run into. Even if he is packin a blower Posted by Hawkeye (Member # 88) on :
Around here - the guys have all done the 4:10's with the stick cars. No complaints at all!
You'll love it!

I have 4:10's and I have no complaints (other than noise....but then I also run a poly tranny mount).
I find that the 4:10's make 6th gear a very useful highway gear (approximately 2200 rpm at 75 mph)
Several guys I know have 4:10's with 370-390 rwhp and I have heard no complaints from them.
Long term, my goal is to also have 390-400 rwhp.

If you are gonna end up with 400+ RWHP, I would normally give you a caution on the 4.10s if drag racing was in your repertoire. That would dictate 12-bolt time. I've dyno'ed 367 RWHP and completely sheared my ring & pinion in August. I suspect that there were other factors involved, however. If you are not drag racing (and running a tire)and perhaps running an autoX event every once in awhile, I'd say to go for the 4.10s and stay away from from the drag strip with the hard launches on glued surfaces. You will be amazed at how this gearing adds to your enjoyment of the car, compared to the 3.42s. A whole different ballgame, IMHO!!! There is a very minimal penalty to pay on the highway with 4.10s - perhaps 1-2 mpg at a 70-75 mph cruise. I had no problems and had to make no sacrifices in cruising down to Bowling Green from Toronto for the last 2 events there. My fuel economy was comparable with stock-geared M6s and A4s in our convoy. (I was never the one who needed to stop for gas!) Admittedly, I chose to cap my cutout for the trip down and the trip back, but that was only done to preserve my calm and peace of mind! I have no experience with the 3.73s, but... from what I've heard, just going from 3.42s to 3.73s ain't worth the effort and expense. good luck on your choice - I know that you will make the best one that will pay the best dividends for you!
Best regardSS,
Elie

You want the 4.10's!! I had just put them in my 2000 6spd before I wrecked it. I ran it on the street, hwy, and at Portland International Raceway. The 4.10s were great. I don't think you will see nearly enough change going with a 3.73.

My car dyno'd 420.6 on the chassis dyno with 4.10 gears. I turn about 1750 r.p.m. in 6th gear at 70 m.p.h
I have never heard any noise, but then again, you don't hear too much above the chambered exhaust.
