Kinda cool, it shows a GM prototype car, that has drive by wire, and a reduction in mechanical controls for systems, using computer controlled hydralics for steering, etc.
The cool part, is they have one model that has the steering wheel mounted on a bar, so it can slide from one side to another, so that a single car can accomodate drivers used to the US car type, as well as foreigners. In addition it makes it easier to change driver control.
It looks kind of intersting, but I wonder about electronics infant-mortality rates when applied to cars drive-by-wire control systems.

You mean the Hy-Wire? it's been out for about a year now. Pretty cool car. If you look at the stats on teh car, it's QUITE impressive. I've written a paper on it already and also will dedicate part of my Social Audit paper of GM to the Hy-Wire and the future of GM and it's cars.

Yes, thats one of the ones they showed. I recognize the picture. It is kind of impressive, but with any new technology, there are always issues. I dont like it when some people try and force new technology quickly into industries like automobiles, sometimes you cant see all the issues with a new technology unless you do serious testing.
But it still does look cool!

More drive by wire systems are just around the bend... heck all the GM trucks have had throttle by wire for the last couple of years..... I like no more annoying vibrations in the gas pedal.

yeah, but I still wonder about how much reliability and lifespan will be affected by increased numbers of electronic control systems.

Only time will tell with new technology. It is Definitly int eh grasp and the ability to produce such cars is there. I think duribility/reliability still has to be checked more thoroughly and the price is gonna be pretty up there. That is a ways down the road because the Hydrogen technology[producing it cheaply]is still not feasable !!!!!!

Wanted to revive this thread. My friend cam across an interesting machine. Pretty sweet statistics:
They have used Drive-By-Wire in some mining trucks for several years now. When I was in college they did a test with a mining truck where they drove it all over a parking lot and then parked it within a few feet of where it was. Come to find out the guy driving it was not even in the same state. It was not only drive by wire but it was also remote controlled via satellite uplink. pretty cool
