Morning all ........... from a cold, snowy North Carolina ............. hope you have a good one
The subject of the pic(s) of the day ......... Bob Glidden, from Whiteland, Indiana ........... the man was a master at making anything run and be ultra-competitive ............. he won Pro/Stock championships in Mustangs, Pintos, T-Birds, Plymouth Arrows, Fairmonts, etc, etc .............. pictured is the Pinto (originally purchased from Gapp & Roush) and the "Flying Boxcar" ....... the Fairmont .............. Bob was an innovator ............ a mechanical genius .............. which brings me to a story.
There was a period in NHRA pro stock racing that the Mopar team consisting of Darryl Alderman and Scott Geoffrion were unbeatable ............ they always found a way to win, even when they didn't qualify well. Then the un-thinkable happened ........ at Dallas Alderman's car suffered an "engine explosion" .......... a flash fire shooting back out of the hoodscoop ............... two weeks later at Houston the same thing happened to Geoffrion's car ................ everyone knows that is a common side effect of improperly metered nitrous oxide ................ but nitrous was strictly prohibited in Pro/Stock
A suspicious break-in at the Rod Shop, in which all their backup engines and equipment was "stolen" precluded an NHRA investigation ........... plus NHRA didn't want to embarrass Chrysler Corporation, who was the cars major sponsor (Chrysler sponsored three of the NHRA meets at that time) ............. NHRA was also under siege because their tech inspections were now in question ........... Glidden was outspoken in his belief that the Mopars were cheating and NHRA couldn't catch them ............... so an agreement was reached .............. Glidden would "Nitrous" his car and try to enter it at some meet in the future ................ well Bob waited almost a year, until the U.S. Nationals at Indy ................. pushed his car through tech inspection ............ it passed as usual .................. he then went out for his first qualifying run ............. destroyed the national record ............ and covered the field by over a quarter of a second ............ he then took the car directly to tech inspection and showed the inspectors the nitrous system .............. the nitrous bottle was hidden in a hollowed out battery in the rear ............ the lines were hidden in the brake lines ................ injector nozzles had been hidden inside the intake manifold, and a dummy "tach" line connected the metering valve hidden under the dash to the engine ............. the man was a genius ............ and NHRA had egg all over their faces .............. he disconnected the system, qualified fourth, and lost in the semi-finals.
By the way ........ the Mopar gang sat out an entire year ............... couldn't get their cars qualified when they did return ........ and closed up shop a little over a year later

Old Coyote... you whould write a book on all your experiences with all the drag racers you've met/known
in addition you can throw in the story of your emergency fule dump over a full drive-in-theatre Posted by Sizzle (Member # 503) on :
Frosty morning again. Man my Spartans can't catch a break, at least the Wings won.

Good day
I want to take a poll.
Never mind , I really want to just say the two best posts everday are Old Coyote's (I love the pics and stories) and Hawkeye's!!

G'morning!
I hate those Old Coyote stories and pic's. The problem is that they show my age, since I remember most of those guys when I went to the drags in the '60's & early '70's. j/k I guess I should be more concerned if I couldn't remember them.
Keep posting those stories and pic's, as they bring back many fond memories. Posted by Mike Bonte (Member # 1892) on :

I agree w/Dan....I look forward to O.C. and Hawkeye's posts, too.
I don't think I've heard the fuel dump story, just references to it.

Teri ............ when I was in the Air Force I was a crewmember on the "Looking Glass" .......... the Strategic Air Command's airborne command post
The climb corridor used at Offutt AFB overflys populated areas ............ we had an engine failure one night right after takeoff ............. we had to abort the takeoff and dump fuel immediately to get back to landing weight ................ we accidentally "showered" a drive-in movie theater and all their "guests" with JP4 jet fuel .................. along with a lot of houses in southwest Omaha and Papillion, Nebraska ............ we did get back down safely, but I don't guess we'll ever live that one down Posted by mhayman (Member # 146) on :
Morning all. Nice day here.
Great story OC - although I haven't heard the fuel dump story either. And I agree with Dan & Teri - it just wouldn't be a new day without Hawkeye's and OC's posts.
Have a good one.

O.C. great story today - kinda a precursor to the Fast and Furious!
I like the photos, luckily I'm kinda young to "remember" them!
Dan, thanks for the kind words (Teri) U 2, I like to try and give everyone a "Good Morning" - just to let you know, that everywhere, there is someone who cares! Posted by OBSSD (Member # 1258) on :
Howdy all. The flight from San Fran got rerouted to Seattle last night because the airport was socked in with fog...didn't get home until after 11pm Posted by NATESS (Member # 982) on :
Pretty windy here today. saw on the news that several trees have already been knocked over. keep your cars in the garage.
