There is a backstory to this. Texas A&M's president announced yesterday that unlike many other universities, A&M will not consider race as in admission of students who apply here. This sounds perfectly reasonable, doesnt it?
Well, today, Texas' most outspoken black congresswoman hit the ground running, with accusations aplenty.
Now, as an Aggie, I will be the first to admit that Texas A&M is a school that has a very large percent of its student body that are white. About half of the black and hispanic students who get accepted actually decide to come here. I think it has to do with the fact that A&M is in its own little town, if you go to UT or UH, you are in a big city, and so a lot of people go to those schools to be close to family; they can also find cheaper housing. A&M has also always been a school that catered to farmers, and people from rural environments, most of the racial minorities in texas congregate in the big cities.
A&M also has a history as an all-male, military school, and women werent allowed until the 1960's, so its not really a surprise that the majority of the student body conforms to the historical roots of the school. However, there are lots of black, hispanic, arabic, and asian students here, most of them in the engineering department, about half my friends here are racial minorities.
Why is it that all the people who claim to be anti-racist appear to be using discrimination in the other direction.
Race was used in Texas over a long period of time to keep people of color, especially African-Americans, out of the higher education system," Ellis said. "It only seems appropriate that race could be used as a factor, just as legacy is used."
