Scott.......I saw this post on another board (link) . You can see this guy is saying that GM doesn't offer the upper console anymore. Can you give us some kind of an idea on what GM will and will not stock for the fourth gens.....and for what period of time they will stock these items.
Thanks

I thought auto manufacturers were required to keep parts in stock for 8 years or so after production?!?!? Is this true?

According to the local Chevy dealer parts manager, there are no set rules for replacement parts. Although the manufacturers do agree to make replacement parts for insurance company and warranty claims for a certain period of time. So it would probably be safe to say for at least another couple of years for 2002 parts. I think GM has stated they'll make Oldsmobile parts for something like 4 or 5 years after the last Olds rolls off the line, but that may have been to try and lure buyers.
As far as the console, I think the guy in question is weinering about a 93 Firebird console (don't know how different it is from Camaro). That's a 10 year-old car. I don't know why he'd think they'd make parts forever. That's the nature of the beast sometimes. The parts manager at the local Chevy dealer told me as long as something is selling, GM will continue to have it produced. When it gets below some magic cutoff point of units sold per time period, they finish out the contract with the supplier, then it sells out from on hand stock, and when it's gone, it goes discontinued.
For fun, I checked on the availability of the 2000-2002 Camaro top console section for MN6....
Shows it's still available.

I think I can answer this one... since I work for the parts group. There is nothing set in stone how long GM keeps stuff... Most trim is gone after about 4 or 5 years. They keep stuff long enough to cover warranty obligations and then all bets are off. Crash parts are kept longer due to laws. For the most part what el ess1 said is true.... So if you anticipate that you're going to keep your car for a while and plan to wear some trim out buy it now while you can....

I don't believe there is any set time anymore. The good news is that the Camaro (and other enthusiast cars) will always have someone making the parts that wear out or break for the most part.......keep in mind that manymanymany parts are not made by GM...they are made by vendors/suppliers.......and that adds to the problem..
