I contemplate that once in awhile, selling my SS and buying another sports car.
Well, I drive a lil 4x4 Toyota Tacoma (all of 150hp) back and forth to work everyday, and I haven't driven my SS since September (I think, its been a long time) don't ask me why, I don't have a clue, but anyway, today is nice and warm and I thought I would go blow some carbon out.
I start the car up and it rumbles to life. As I sit there behind the wheel listening to the idle (I had forgotten how good this thing sounds.) I blip the throttle. Oh yeah, this thing sounds REAL good and a rush of wonderful memories instantly come back to me. (the time KenC, HerHawk and I whooped up on that 81 Vette on I95, the time I took the wrong turn and missed the NJ Turnpike sign and saved the convoy about 25 cents in tolls; Chabs rendition is different but this is my story!, my first ever SLP event, driving around meeting new 4th Gen owners one of which was the best man in my wedding etc.... )
On with the story...
I pull out of the my parking spot and ride the brakes a little (need to clean off that surface rust) Then hit the brakes, oops, forgot I did that C5 Brake Conversion, cold tires slide when you hit these brakes! No biggie, it was only about a half foot. Never the less I go out and run up and down the highway and bring it home. And as I was driving I can't get that phrase that The Fbodfather has said to me so many times. The Camaro was built for the enthusiast, Big power, great performance at an affordable price. And today I realized again just how much fun it is to own this car. Though this badge is no longer being produced, I still have faith that something will come along and fill that void.
Take care friends. Have a great weekend. And thanks for reading.
Doug

YEah, I love my SS, although if I get what I ask for it, I will sell it. It's definitely a mixture of emotions with me and the SS. I'm busy at work so maybe later I will indulge in the details.

AS you know, for some reason that I can't explain, I am very attached to this particular car and unless something goes terribly wrong in my life, I have no intentions of selling it.
Now, the Z06 on the other hand would go in a minute if the prices were right, no matter the brand. I like it, but I own it for the performance vs the dollar only. I have no emotional attachment to it.

you know if Grace wants to keep her truck in the garage for the winter, your Z06 will fit in mine no problem.
roads down here are much wider too, so no potential of any pole shear damage either.

to answer Doug's question... yeah, I've thought about it.
Since the kids came along, I hardly ever get to drive her. Shoot, since BG '02, I've put less than 4k miles on her.
She's all paid off, so whatever I get I can put into my pocket but... I look at the resale values and realize... this car is worth much more to me than I could get for it.
I find a dose of what you did Doug always seems to make me realize that too.
Posted by poSSum (Member # 119) on :
I doubt the SS will ever get sold ...even if I do get another car for the performance aspect.
What the car is, the way I learned about it (SLP message board), the friends made at the events since (started by the first SLP Engineering Customer Appreciation event) .... simply a life experience that cannot be duplicated.
Perhaps a better car will come along ...though I doubt the "bang for the buck" will ever be matched and platform sharing and safety standards will generate a "neutering " effect ...but it's unlikely that we wil ever see another community come together like the 4th gen F-body one did.

I don't think I could. It's given me too much. Even if for some reason I never drove it again, I don't think I could let it go.

No, I don't even think about selling the SS. It's too much of a fun car! I tend to hang on to my cars, usually untill the end (but not always). I still drive the 1983 Volvo that I got on 12-82. I still have my 1968 Ford pick-up I got in 1977, and I still have the '69 Camaro project. Posted by vargod (Member # 1116) on :
I say NO, but I said the same thing about the 99 HOSS and the 96 CE LT4 Vette I had. I think the difference is though, I love the unqiness of this car. Now, when everything gets back to normal again and there are 2 incomes coing into the house, there will be another car for me. Either a noce collect that won't be touch and the 97 30th SS will be played with or a project car. Either way the SS is staying in the family.

Actually, Grace's truck is in the garage. The SS is sqeezed into the original garage and Grace's truck and the Z06 are in the new garage. AND, the pole is gone, so no mirror delete worries! Posted by FireChicken (Member # 2067) on :
Yeah, I contemplate it, and then answer myself with two words. "Hell, no".

I have those same thoughts as well ... while I don't really have any specific attachement to my SS, I've owned and driven a Camaro since I've had my license.
What usually snaps me back to reality is my three year old daughter riding along with me (in the back seat, of course) and saying "Camaro has t-tops!" I can't imagine not having this car when she's a bit older and can better appreciate it.
Posted by el ess1 (Member # 1544) on :
I not only never think of selling the car, since it took a lot of effort just to get them to build it right in the first place, but I've actually been hoarding some parts back from GM while they're still available for the EVENTUAL restoration many years from now. A lot of people don't give that much thought right now with a 2002 model, but I'm here to tell you, it'll be MUCH cheaper to get some of the harder to find trim parts now than pay 10-20 times the original price for it later. That $4 "35th" plastic plaque on the dash today may go for 30 bucks later easily at a swap meet when you can't get them anymore, trust me on this.

All the time. Just haven't found a car I like better right now. I'm used to having mid 80's Monte Carlo's. Big honking V-8's (After motor swaps), A trunk, etc. A LS6 powered GTO would have it in for the SS.

My 2002 SS it is the last of a breed and would I sell it? Everything is for sale at the right price! I enjoy this car the offer would have to be huge, since that will not happen for many years I continue to enjoy and drive this awesome car (On dry days only). It is almost paid for, and the smiles it produces everytime I drive it make it worth keeping!

I've thought about selling the Hawk several times... but the fact that I have so much money tied up into it with the new motor I would never do it. Plus, once I get a few small bugs worked out, a TA rear spoiler and a paint job, I'll have a "brand new" '94 Firehawk with about 33K miles on it that performs better than any car I've ever owned.

Besides, my youngest son Ben, called it when I die! The first day I brought it home he said "I get it when he dies!"
I still get that "feeling" when I turn the key and the LS1 roars to life. I love watching the faces of the Euro Racers (BMW) when they think their M5's will dust me off - no way!
I just have'nt found a better bang for the buck - yet!

In regards to my 01 SS... I'd sell mine if the price was right, but other than that and despite all its shortcomings I love it. I am fortunate enough to live in San Diego where I get to drive mine ALL year round.
Couple years from now I'll let it go when it really starts to fall apart. I've gotten rid of all my other Camaros, this one is no different.
The only one I'll never sell is my 68. My wife is gonna have to bury me in that one. Posted by JohnS (Member # 1073) on :
I waited 25 years to buy muscle/pony car, from the time I sold my '71 Camaro in 1974 until '99 when I bought my SS. I wanted a hobby car, but I didn't have the time I thought I would have to restore or maintain an earlier generation. I chose the SS 'cause it had the most horsepower/dollar at the time, the looks were awesome, and the LS1 - well its just got to be the best V8 I've ever owned. A bonus was making many new friends and acquaintances in the F-body family.
Would I sell it? Probably yes, but only when I can't get in or out of it anymore. Posted by 2002Z4CSS (Member # 1393) on :

You should sell then both and get a BMW. Then you can have a perfect car with no shortcomings!
In fact you should give me the 68 because I am a GM lover. You shouldn't have either one.

My 02SS was delivered on Nov.11th of 01. I had been wanting another Camaro since 98 when Chevy started installing the LS1's in them(this is my 5th,at least 1 of each gen.)So many things were going on in my life between 98-02 I could'nt see a new car purchase as a prudent thing to do. But when they anounced the desision to end production with the 02 model year, I new I had to have one. I had a daily driver and said I wouldn't put a lot of miles on it, but DAMN I love driving this car!!! I have 19K on it in a little over 2 years, and it has been perfect since day 1. Solid. I have a 10 year old son that I hope will grow up to appriciate this car and its history and be able to pass it on to him

For me since I didn't grow up in the 60's during the true muscle car era for me the SS is the "muscle car" from my generation..... Its been a while since I driven mine but I moved it out of the garage today to get into the attic and the sounds from the LS1 was SWEET music.....

no way,,, I wanted an F-body since Nightriger came out (I was like 8 or so so I was young and impressionable) ...then my dad's company car being an 82 Camaro ... that was it ... That was my car I would have and the driving reason I completed college ... soon as I graduated and landed a job... I ordered the hawk (got a hawk over the SS because I could get GM employee pricing on it ) Now As I sit back and reflect that I could have bought a reasonable car so I can save $$$ for a house and be finanicially secure.. I still cannot put a price on a 20 year dream that came true... The hawk represents 20 yearsa of dreams to me, so I easliy delayed buying a house so I can get one of the new last-year F-bodies . you cannot put a price on happiness.

These cars do something to me. I feel I am priveledged, in that I learned how to drive on an fbody, my first car was an LG4 '86 Trans Am with t-tops and a 5speed. Always imagined that I would ALWAYS own one, but it seems the General had different ideas. So just have to keep the SS alive as long as I can.

WOW we had some really great responses. Amazing how these cars create stories and friendships. I think DanA said it best, he never owned a car where other owners openly opened their homes to invite them in. Which is true.
my 97 SS is my 2nd 4th Gen. I traded my 95Z28 for this car and I was glad i did. I met more people and have more stories because of it.
Even though I like Mustangs (I never owned one) I like the rivalry it brings. And I am hoping GM has something in the works to compete against the new 2005 300hp Mustang GT.
But above all that. I think we can all say that when you see a fellow Camaro, or Firebird that is all decked out you just gotta give a wave.
My heart still races when I spot a Firehawk or a Camaro SS or an Ultra Z/WS6 type car.
Anyway...Lets keep these cars alive and strong. I am hoping one day to be able to park a Firehawk or another Camaro SS next to my present car (this time with LS1 power!)
Peace, and be safe out there.

Dont get me wrong, I love the car but right now it's just sitting in a garage for the past few months. Yes I have, and in all probability I will sell it in the next year or two to buy a ’70 or ’71 Cuda 440+6 or a ’73 TA SD455 or a C6 Vette, but I will still keep my ’91 Formula. For some reason, my ’91 holds a much dearer spot in my heart than does the ‘02. As nice as the Hawk is, it’s stock (and will stay that way) and is pretty much just like thousands of other 4th gen Hawks out there. The ’91 however is pretty much a 3rd gen Firehawk without the markings or the official number. It has a mean lopey idle, gobs of torque, reminds me of my old big block MoPar musclecars, and has that scrappy street fighter feel to it, not to mention the sleeper aspect…it’s pretty much unrefined. If I didn’t have the Formula, I would in all probability hold on to the Hawk (as I would if I could ever pick those right 6 numbers), but there are just too many other toys out there I would like to have. Still, I really enjoy cruising in the Hawk…loved cruising up to Englishtown back in ’02 and to Skyline in ’03 at 80 mph with the A/C on and tunes in the changer playing through the Monsoon and getting 29+ mpg, love the looks of the car, the feel of the car and the looks I get when I drive the car. And the great part is that I still have another year or two to enjoy it while thinking of my next dream car… Posted by THEOS SS (Member # 1484) on :
In 1973 I was all set to buy a red Z/28, I was 17 and needed my dad to cosign. Everything was going great and dad was ready to sign the papers when he looked at the salesman, who was a neighbor and good friend of his and asked,HOW MUCH WILL INSURANCE COST FOR THIS CAR? That was the end of that.It took almost 30 years to finally own my SOM SS,There's not enough money in the world to buy her!

I'm getting buried in my Z7D...already told the family that.....(well, maybe....)
I told my family that I want to be buried in either my IROC or my SS with either one in a plot next to me. I will keep mine until my last breath. Posted by WD,30th SS#727 (Member # 107) on :
The first true "ride" in a muscle car I can remember, was riding in a friends 69 metallic blue Z28 way back in high school. When I grew up, and made a little money, I purchased a lemans blue 69 and loved that car till the 30th anniversary SS came out. I never had been intrigued by the fourth gens. until SLP reintroduced the SS. I tried to keep both, but between insurance and my wife wanting her garage space back, the 69 was sold. I 'll have another 69 one day, and needless the say the 30th will not likely be sold (never say never). I love this car Posted by Bill Mason (Member # 1807) on :
We have typically kept our cars for 6-7 years and rack up about 160,000+ kms on them before they go.
The current two are different though. We have had the Vette (C4) for 9 years and it is not leaving us anytime soon. Alice loves that car and it may very well be her last car.
My Firebird is now almost 6 years old and has 171,000 kms on it. I will have this car for as long as I can keep it on the road, and that will be for a long time to come. It will only go when it completely falls apart.
However, WHEN the F5 come out.....all bets are off. Posted by cytruffle (Member # 1733) on :

Some probably remmebr my 97 Hendrick SS #31 of 61 that my good buddy Doug found for me Well, I sold that to buy a 01 C5 (museum delivery and all) and to this day I regret it...had the vette two years then traded it on the Firehawk...the Firehawk is staying (right now under the car cover in the garage) and I am having tons of fun modifying and playing with ym new 4x4, but the Firehawk will stay...I'm blessed enough that my wife has a Mustang GT as well so we can enjoy the best of both sides..either way I won't make the same mistake again Posted by el ess1 (Member # 1544) on :
Mike Bonte's pics reminds me of the days of when our cars were new and many of us couldn't wait. I couldn't get rid of my Camaro, ever. Besides, who could forget their first baby pictures at the nursery and during delivery...
Isn't he cute?
Baby's first steps...that's a boy! Come to papa!...
