Our local newspaper ran a spread on the Detroit Auto Show this morning. A large picture of the '05 Mustang led off the article on the front page of the auto section, with a sizable written description. The C6 was mentioned with a smaller photo on the 4th page. As much as we dislike Ford, you've got to hand it to them for introducing a vehicle that is grabbing the general public's attention.

Love the new 'stang - Shelby has a version that rocks!
Will be seeing it "live" next week at the Detroit Auto Show. Can't wait for the release of the next Camaro!

Maybe I'm the only one, but the new Stang does nothing for me... at least in the looks deparment. TOO retro for my taste. I hear you can even get the old 3 pronged chrome hub spinners on the wheels of the V6 Model.

I liked the concept car but the one they are showing now is very different looking. The only thing that looks the same as the concept are the headlights. The rest of it looks too similar to the current Mustang for me to be excited about it. It's too bad because I thought the concept one was really cool, even if it was very retro-looking.

I dont like the 4X4 fog lights on the front grill. I liked the concept version much better, although Shelby's '05 Mustang is sweet. Hey, altleast their making an affordable muscle car still. Although I do think these retro cars are a dying breed too, they only sell for a few yearsand then die off, look at the T-Bird, didn't they just stop the Beetle too?

I agree. Wonder how long the retro look will boost sales? Also, how do you redesign a retro designed car? At least it will be very interesting to see the way things unfold.

I totally agree. I can't understand why the retro look. Can't they come up with something new. It didn't work with the Thunderbird, not saying it won't work here but come on guys lets get with the 21st Century.

Much bigger Mustang crowd than there is Tbird, so retro may work for it.

If you chack out the Mustang message boards, most people really like the new car. So chances are Ford will have a big sucess on their hands with existing owners. And when the time comes for the GM crowd to buy NEW, they will pick up many of those people too. So I think it will be a major sucess. And for our sake, I hope it's a major sucess too to continue the pressure on GM for a new Camaro.
BTW.......I don't know if the Mustang is that much more "RETRO" than it has been in the past. The current 04 Mustang looks a lot like the originals as well. And I think you will find the Mustang has for the most part generally stayed true to the orignal design. The Camaro did not stay true to the original though. So all in all I don't think Ford is risking much with it's new design.
Way to go Scott.....keep on dragging your people over to the stand and then you can remind them "I told you so"!

I would never buy a Ford Mustang either. The closest I ever came was sitting in one to see why people liked the seating posaition of it. For the record, I was completely unimpressed.
From the pictures, I think Ford has finally come up with a front end that ties into the rest of the (boxy) body, and I think they will sell a lot of them.
Scott....keep dragging them over and mke them stand there for a while and listen to the comments from the public. That should do it, eh!!

Maybe Ford will add a lot of '60's retro stuff to the 'stang, e.g. I had a friend who bought a brand new blue metallic '67 hatchback 'stang, and financed it fo 5 years. It had rust holes in it after just 3 years, so he ended up having to pay for his rustang for two more years. What started out to be a nice looking car, ended up to be a rusted out hulk by the time he finished the payments (at least my '64 Chevelle lasted for 5 years). I did have a 2nd gen, but I guess I missed the adjustable rear frame option.

I like the car. It's not perfect but I didn't like the 4th gen when it came out, but the SS grew on me. So I guess the new mustang has got a head start. I'm waiting for a SVT version of the new car and if it's nice I may own a Ford again.

My thoughts exactly. Isn't that what many people would desire, however? You want a new design for a 5th gen, but it best have some markers reflecting its heritage, because you want people to KNOW it's a Camaro and not confuse it with a Taurus, correct? Also, in the back of the latest PHR magazine, the author is looking to buy a new vehicle. One of his statements about new car offerings rings true with me which goes something like..."they have everything, except what I want."
I've never been excited over any Mustang, but this one DOES look a whole lot better IMO. Not as cool as the proto, though. And sales will soon tell the tale. If you do or don't like it, so, what? The ones who actually buy it will determine its fate. I personally think the styling is nice, and their retro example isn't as expensive as GM's retro (SSR), trust me. I will say I could go look at one and maybe even test drive one, but I'm not sure I could pull the trigger and say I'd actually buy one. But you never know. If it's the only RWD, V8 powered muscle around in a few years, I might not have a choice outside of a 'vette.
Underneath it all, I do hope, partly, the Mustang is a huge success. Because as history tells you, the Mustang is what gave us the F-car in the first place. Maybe continued support, or hopefully renewed support, for pony cars may get our Camaro and/or Firebird back in the showrooms.
