Saw someone posted this on camaroz28.com. I thought SLP was trying to get the rights to the name or already had the name? Did they give it up to GM? Am I missing something?

Didn't SLP get the trademark to "The Judge" name or was that "Judge" w/o "The"? Just curious. Thought it was interesting.

smart move by SLP ...
DUMB move by GM letting theri rights expire....
Maybe SLP can buy SLP out of their rights Posted by Rhode Island Red (Member # 220) on :
ok what is the difference between the tradmark GM got rights for and SLP has ... I see no difference rigth off hand Posted by JeffY (Member # 120) on :
SLP has automobile rights, GM has parts rights, not cars.
Posted by TimeLord (Member # 1389) on :
So all GM has to do is is call it a GM "parts car" The Judge.
THE JUDGE,,brought to you by GM Performance parts.
Not allow SLP to transform ANY GTOs into Judges and if they do void all warranties on the car.
GM has much deeper pockets than SLP and they can afford a long legal battle SLP can't.

Timelord, Remember Ford lost the court battle over the GT40 when they let the trademark expire.
I would think the courts would find in favor of SLP because they are now the registered owner of that trademark.
GM will obviously void the engine warranty (IMHO) but the rest of the car I would think it tough to void the warranty for.

It's really all speculation.
As far as I know, neither GM nor SLP have commented publicly on the matter since the initial article appeared in a trade mag.
I have not gotten the impression that relations are bad between them. I think it is premature to assume so.
This is just business. Issues need to be worked through.

Yes Kevin,Ford lost the battle for the name use on a car they are producing and marketing, thus the GT nameplate.
If GM decides that ANY work done on a GTO [built and marketed by them] by SLP would adversely affect the performance or durability of the vehicle,[SLP not being the TIER 1 it was with the SS]then SLP would probably not have much of a market to work with.
People who lay 35K on a car probably want the warranty, people who spend 500K on a car can afford not to worry about that.
Much easier to find some middle ground and not let this go too far,if it goes to court it could weaken SLP.

Here's a thought. What if these trademark registrations reflect an agreement between GM and SLP rather than a conflict? The two companies have an agreement which allows SS and Firehawk hoods and spoilers to be purchased only through GM restoration parts. SLP still supplies these parts but can't legally sell them directly. My thinking is that they may have reached a similar agreement regarding the GTO Judge. If so, then SLP made a brilliant move by trademarking the Judge name putting themselves in a great bargaining position with GM.

Possible!!

I'm not sure it's optimism, I just added up what we know and came up with a possible explanation. I do hope that I'm right, however. Posted by HTWLSS (Member # 117) on :

How about the power of positive thinking? I've got a whole lotta that and I am holding on to hope that we'll see new Camaro down the road someday (holding breath). Being optimistic won't hurt a bit!
