Anyone else have a problem with Windows XP Professional failing to recognize a 200 Gb hard disk, recognizing it instead as a 130 GB disk? Put my computer together this weekend, and thats the only issue I have found.

FC in order to install a drive larger than a 130G drive the Bios must be updated and of course your motherboard has to support the update. Last month I upgraded to a 250G drive. The HD came with an update for the Bios. Check the SW that came with your HD.

What happens if the Bios detects it as a 200 GB drive? The mainboard is brand new, Asus board with an AMD Athlon XP 3000.

Here are a few things to check. This is from the W. D. Web site. Good luck. I have an Intel MB and P4 proc. and had no problems after updating the Bios. GOOD LUCK. Let me know what you find.
Problem The full capacity of EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) is not recognized in Windows 2000/XP.
Resolution 48-bit LBA support is necessary for drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA support in Windows 2000/XP:
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) must be installed for Windows XP versions prior to August 2002. For information about SP1, see Microsoft Article 322389.
The system must have a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed. This includes EIDE controller card BIOSs.
You must enable the support in the Windows registry.

Well, I found out a few things....
The bios is updated to the point where it reads the drive correctly, so that is bigdrives compatible (no surprise, since its a new mainboard).
Interesting thing is that when I install windows xp, AND put in service pack 1, it still does not register that hard drive as a single. It does show the 137 GB, and the rest as unallocated space. Unfortunately, this is the main harddrive on the system, so I cant install windows, and then add it as a slave.
So I think that tomorrow Im going to try and load partition magic, and see if that will let me combine the unallocated space into the existing partition. If not, I will just use PM to create a second partition for data storage. That will actually make things easier, because then it will allow me to swap space back and forth, so that if my program files or data storage needs increase, I can easily modify the system.

After installing a single drive that has a larger size than 137 GB, Partition Magic Version 8 has a utility that allows you to distribute remaining free space between existing drives (or add it to a single drive). This allows the free space over 137 GB to be added to the C partition after installing windows.
