Now I am not one to constantly promote rescuing dogs because it is near and dear to my heart, but HBO has a documentary on about shelter dogs and what goes on at a shelter in NY. This is a "no kill" shelter, but life and death decisions have to be made. If anyone was ever wondering why rescue wrok is so important and why my wife and I do it, please watch thsi special tomorrow night on HBO
Thanks for listening!!

I think it is wonderful what you and your wife are doing. I am a big animal lover. Great job and thanks. Posted by Hawkeye (Member # 88) on :
We were a foster home for dogs for several years, till our other "life" took over. We'll probably do it again one day. We took in and placed lots of "unwanted" animals. For the most part they turned out to be treasured family members. Posted by 2002Z4CSS (Member # 1393) on :
After my Sharpei, Yoshi was killed I felt so guilty that he went to an un-derserving home...I went to our local Michigan Humane Society and adopted Hines...an 8 year old German Sheperd mix.She is an excellent dog and I can't seem to know why someone brought her there in the 1st place. She was there the longest of all of the dogs they had.No one wanted to adopt an 8 year old German Sheperd mix. Most seem to want a young pure bread dog.I guess I was blessed when I got Hines!

Thanks for the compliment Ken!! Rescue workers need to hear that every once in a while because it's tough sometimes because there are so many to save but we do what we can! We've got three dogs ourselves (white shepherd, shepherd/retriever, shepherd/basenji) and we'd probably have another if we had bigger house Posted by BCKNBLK (Member # 2207) on :

Excellent and a gorgeous dog for sure!! The older ones for sure are the hardest to get adopted. There's a story on the show tonight about an older shepherd and the struggle to get it adopted. The show debuts tonight but I have read a lot of good things about it and it really opens the eyes to what rescue work is about. Thanks!

Sometimes I watch that pet adoption show on Animal Planet in the mornings before I head off to the office. I was so moved one day back in December that I surprised my wife with a visit to an adoption shelter that weekend. We met several really sweet dogs and a few that were all together not that good for us but... the next day we brought Cosmo home. I'm glad we were able to give him a good home. He's a good doggy.

Great work Bruce and Kerm and Mary too! Good causes and worthwile for sure.
Here are my two boyz since this is the dog post thread. I bought them from a breeder but only because we couldn't find a dog fairly local at the time!! We checked quite a few places. I guess in an area like NH it's not as much of a problem.

So who watched the show last night? I saw it both times and it was heart breaking to see animals like that. I can understand putting a dog down if that animal is to aggressive and could hurt a child. The NO KILL shelter's would be a good idea but to leave them in a pen all thier life is wrong, they just need to come up with another way to handle these animals. I've rescued 3 dogs so far, not from the SPCA but from people that did not take care of them. They have turned out to be some of the best dogs I've ever owned. Missed the show last night, didn't see this till this morning. May be a good thing, I have a really hard time watching shows like that.As Bruce knows, we are 100% rescue "parents". Down to 2 now, but if/when we decide we're ready for 3 again, it will definitely come from rescue. Some friends of ours used to be the MD coordinators for Malamute rescue, and after seeing the time and effort they put in, and everything they went through, my hat's off to anyone does that sort of work.

Yes we saw and had the Kleenex nearby....I know you say it's best not to see it, but to you I say how can you expect others to learn what it takes to help and rescue when you aren't even willing to watch it yourself? How can we use it to educate people to help and adopt and how hard a job it really is when we won't watch it ourselves? We really didn't want to, but we did because we HAD to! You have to get a feeling for what it's like and how stressful it can be. It was an AWESOME show and we really cried when they put down "Agnes"...what a sweet sweet dog! Anyway, I hope it provided some education for some! It is being played several more times so please check the schedule and take the time to see it...it's worth it!

Great Show!, ...saw it last night (while the white stuff fell... ) That place is very nearby as I live less than 15 miles away. Hats off to those that volunteer their time for this worthwhile cause. I can understand the "no kill" concept, ...but like was said, ...it just isn't right for them to be caged up for so long. Some really tough decisions on the part of the shelter workers...

yeah it did give you a different perspective on euthenizing....i never really thought about it, but the point was made that a troubled or emotional dog will only get worse locked up in a cage...even as volunteers ourselves we learned a lot from it...you could tell those workers had a stressful life..you could see it in all their faces and I know how hard it is to do that part time, but full time really takes it's toll...they deserve A LOT of credit for sure

Let me throw my $.02 in, but as a cat lover.....some of the absolute sweetest animals you will ever find are at a shelter.....and I speak from experience. It's almost like they realize how fortunate they are that you have rescued them, and they are devoted to you for the rest of their lives....and I'm talking about CATS, mind you...I can't even imagine the devotion and loyalty that a dog would show!! Bruce - You know Kim and I, and I think you missed my point. I totally agree with you, and think people need to understand this. I for one do understand and am educated in this area. I have seen the heart ache, stress, and emotional drain on people doing rescue and working in shelters. I have heard and seen the stories from my friends in rescue. If we had the resources and the time to give them the attention they deserve, we'd probably have 10 dogs. Like I said, we will forever more have rescued, adopted pets. I wasn't saying people shouldn't watch, they should. I just choose not to, because I get too emotional, and already know what goes on.

we got our new "child", Sydney, from a foster home a couple of weeks ago.....7 month female lab/border collie/corgi....
although Sydney was brought home based on my wife's wishes, I am very pleasantly surprised at how attached I have become to her....what a loss if she had not found a home with us....
many thanks to everyone who invests so much in rescue efforts!!

I have always loved Dogs. The Collie and Golden Retriever have always been my favorite. Someday I will own one or the other but after the two I have now.
