Anybody have an experience modifying a long antenna to a "shorty"??
I have a spare and I am thinking of shortening the mast. I have heard the load/resistance will change if the mast is shortened, and I am NOT an electronics wiz... But I am concerned this may cause a problem.
Also, I have seen several 8" masts selling on eBay, anyone have one on their f-bod or Z06??

I know of many people who have purchased shorter mast antennas or actually cut the stock antenna with no problems.
Have you considered an electric antenna?

My coworker has a "shorty" antenna on his ZO6. He said the reception was fine. I think he said (it's been awhile) the reception was poor on far away stations that would normally be pulled in by a taller antenna.

I have the shorty on my Z06. It is good enough since the stereo in the Z06 sucks anyway! I have an electric in my SS. I love it and that is the way to go!

I took a pair of vise-grips on grabed the ball on the ant. Took pliers to the other end. work back and forth until ball comes off. Take a dremel or cutting tool of your choice, cut the ant. at 15 inches from base. File the end to make it fit in the hole on the ball... tap the ball on the ant. several times, or even add some glue like substance to hole on the ball... paint gloss black, reinstall.. Done.. Have done about 10 of these for firends.. all work good.. But I dont listen to the radio, i listen to Cd's or XM.. But reception seems ok.

Don't think you could have. You can add the electric antenna afterwords. I believe the electric was a Pontiac only option. Lots of us have done the electric option, it's a fairly easy install. Posted by el ess1 (Member # 1544) on :

As far as "when you purchased" your car doesn't mean anything as there was no antenna choices (at least not on my order form) in the U.S. markets. You can use the same soft rubber grommet in the fender as the fixed mast. Unscrew antenna mast, and take out spare tire. Unplug radio coax, remove one 10 mm hex head screw, and wiggle down and out. Now you're ready for your new power antenna.
However, they DO have an electric antenna specifically made for Camaro you can buy from GM. Plus an electrical connector if you want. Part numbers are:
Antenna- electric, black- 10402859, $83.50 delivered from gmpartsdirect.com Comes with mounting bracket and drain hose. Antenna wiring Connector (not a HAVE to have part, but makes it easily disconnectable if you choose)-12117322 (listed under "lighter element"- $22.08 delivered price from gmpartsdirect.com
Grommet for drain hose (if you drill the side of the spare tire well for drain outlet)- $1.26 list price, but buy from your local dealer because the shipping charge is too much from gmpartsdirect.com otherwise, plus you'd have to buy 5 as they're 5 to a pack.- part #10136754
You'll need a way to run a 7/16" ID tubing extension out of the car for water drainage somehow if you don't elect to drill a hole in the side of the inner trunk metal. I slit the rubber drain plug at the bottom of the spare tire well as to not to cut into the car. Simple to do. www.installuniversity.com and others have instructions on how to install it. I've done it to mine and it takes a couple of hours, but it works.
Some others put in a hidden manual switch inline between the switched radio power connection and antenna so if they're listening to CDs they don't need to raise the antenna, but can raise it whenever they choose to listen to radio.
