This is a long story, but it shows what we in education put up with...(Millie will feel our pain on this...)
Two times this month, our house has been "wrapped" with toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins. The first time, I happened to be outside with my Sig Sauer .357 automatic and let a few rounds "slip" out of the barrel into the culvert, which scared the you know what out of them. The Monday morning after that, we figured out who it was.
The next weekend, they came back and did it again, only this time they set off firecrackers in our trashcan, waking the whole neighborhood. By this time, we were rather upset with cleaning up our yard, so we told the students (the same kids both times) that it needed to stop. Once was ok, but 2x was too much.
The other day, Missi was handing out papers and dropped one of the participant's papers on the floor and told him that since she's cleaned up her yard twice from his mess, he could bend down and pick up paper off of her classroom floor. He got rather vocal about it and was sent out of the room.
Yesterday, she heard that the same student has threatened to break into our garage and do "something" to her SS.
Sorry about the long post, but I figured y'all would be interested to know how our lives go each day. I will hopefully find said student having broken into my garage...what happens to him after that is a toss-up... Posted by SVT THIS (Member # 1352) on :

1. I'd call the police 2. She shouldn't have told the student to pick up the paper that she dropped. She lowered herself to the student's level and she brought her personal life into the classroom.

Since I'm a reserve deputy for the sheriff's department, I'm going to talk to the sheriff himself about the situation just to give him a head's up on what's going on and also to see what options are available for us.
It's one thing to have them out in the yard vandalizing (which is a Class C misdemeanor), but totally different if he's threatening to break in...

I agree! I was real firm with my kids when they were growing up. I too used to get my share from my dad. I think I did a great job with my kids.They never ever got in any trouble and got good grades in school. Today they are nice adults.

I'd ask the Sheriff to pay the little puke a visit at school, in front of everyone else, and explain that his threats are taken seriously and what the consequences will be if he follows through.

I told Missi that she shouldn't have dropped the papers, but it's all hindsight...I really don't think that having him pick up papers off of the floor is grounds for burglary of a habitation.

OK....in DISD, that is considered a "terroristic threat"....a threat made to life or property. The kid is sent to the Ass't. Principal, who then authorizes the counselor (moi) to do a Violence Risk Assessment on the kid, which consists of interviewing him/her with a set of questions to obtain a Violence Risk Score.
Depending on the score (and sometimes the counselor's gut feeling....), the kid is then handed over to his parents OR to the police -- right then & there!!
IMHO, just to cover your a$$, I would make every administrator in that school aware of the kid's threat AND demand that the parents come up to school to discuss it RIGHT NOW TODAY, so that (God forbid) if anything happens, enough people were aware of the steps YOU took to head it off. Then the monkey's on their back......
I'd hate to see YOU in trouble because of a punk kid...."he's only 14...he's a CHILD....oh boohoo boohoo..." y'know how THAT goes....and BELIEVEYOUME they will take up for these little twerps after the fact.....
...best to nail him, his big mouth, & his parents BEFORE anything happens.....

Missi's already given our principal the heads up on it, so it's taken care of on that end. She also called the parents and gave them forewarning yesterday about what was going on, so either they're going to get the kid straight, or they'll be up here today griping. We'll see what happens...

one of the many reasons my husband and I have chosen to NOT have children. It's really sad how bad things have gotten. Just watched the news last night: 1. Four teens charged with murdering an elderly couple (1 kid was the grandson) 2. 14 year old girls charged with terrioist threats at school. They made a hit list of students
it's very sad - kids do whatever they want these days

You're right, having him pick up the papers isn't grounds for burglary... but it doesn't make what she did right.

I've always said I want to have my own island when I retire. This is just one more reason to add to the list.
I totally agree that kids behavior today is directly linked to their parents. It's one of the things I worry about most with my son. He's been an issue in school (not with threatening but his behavior and some other things) and I know he knows that isn't acceptable and wonder what the school must think of all of us!
I also agree the comment in class was uncalled for though I can totally relate to the impulses that let it fly. We're all human and entitled to make mistakes. Sounds as if your wife copped to what she did so that is no longer an issue as far as I would be concerned.
Absolute best of luck with this situation. Hopefully this kid just had a little to much testosterone coursing thru his system and lipped off with out really meaning it. Hopfully the show of force will discourage him (and other little testosterone (and estrogene) nearly adults ) into thinking before they say something in the future.

Milli's solution sounds like the best one yet. Can you get the school to follow thru with the suggestions she gave? Certainly the parents should be notified and if the school backs her up so much the better.
Kids need discipline and if they don't get it, they are going to see how much they can get away with, especially if they are trouble makers.

So, Missi just told the principal, but just to advise him of the situation. She didn't want discipline. Since we live in the county, advising the sheriff of the situation will suffice.

But these things are happening OUTSIDE of school premises and has nothing to do with it. Now if they make a threat IN school, then yes, the school should handle that end, but what has happened at your place is grounds for the police to intervent. Not that I know all the laws or whatever. This would be great....but unfortunately, at least in DISD, you can't do that. First of all, the only people that can talk to a child at school without parent permission is CPS when a complaint has been filed against the parents for child abuse.
Second, there's the off-chance that the kid really didn't say that....could have been a rumor....Missi would have to hear it first-hand from the kid for there not to be a problem. That's why the counselors interview kids in these situations, and most of the time, there's nothing there -- the kid is just shooting off his/her mouth.
Also, in so many of these supposedly clear-cut situations, you have to "what-if" it to death, and it helps if you can visualize YOUR child in that same situation. Otherwise, you set yourself up for repercussions (however unfair they may seem) from the parents. For example, just supposing that some jerk said that MY son made a threat to a teacher and the sheriff came up to school and embarrassed him in front of everyone, you BET I'd throw a hissyfit.
AAAAAAnnnnnnddddd another thing: Mr. Old Coyote.....YOU could probly get away with putting a load of buckshot in the kid's rear, but bet yer bottom dollar that Mr. and Mrs. TwobratSS would be drawn and quartered if they even THOUGHT about doing that because THEY WORK FOR THE SCHOOL!! The wife tried to convince me that it was the "Mailman" till I told her we had a mail "Lady" delivering the mail . But Alec is not a bad kid A's & B's on the report card all the time . Usually have one of his friends spend the night allmost every wkend. This way we know where he is and who his friends and the parents are. This is where the parents have to be in order to keep an eye on the kids. Let them make the decisions (to a certain extent) but be able to tell them what you dont like .

Rest assured Millie, I would never actually consider doing anything like that, not even to scare the little cretin. I will not use any of my weapons unless a member of my family is threatened or I am placed in a position of serious danger. But, given those situations .......... in a heartbeat

Bryan, I have been a reserve deputy for 20 years now with the largest sheriff's office in my state. Things certainly must be much different in Texas compared to Iowa. If my sheriff found out I had fired my weapon "even to scare the idiots", I would no longer be a reserve deputy.
I understand and sympathize with your situation. I suggest, as others did, to let the sheriff handle it before it gets out of hand and God forbid, someone gets hurt.
Just my .02 worth.

I'm talking to the sheriff tomorrow at church. I also called some parents yesterday and told them that their kids were not to be on my property any more.
I was not acting as a deputy at the time I shot into the culvert, I was acting as a husband and father that did not want his family troubled anymore, especially if I did not know the intentions of their actions. I believe MY actions were no different than any other average Texan that lives in a rual area.

Bryan, I am glad you are going to discuss it will the Sheriff tomorrow.
I understand the husband and father issue. Just remember that the public and the judicial system hold us to a MUCH HIGHER LEVEL than anyone else because of our position and training even though we are just reserve officers and as a reserve deputy, you are always considered "on duty" even if you are not wearing a uniform.
Don't misunderstand what I am saying. I do sympathize with you and I would not want anything to happen to you, your family or your car. Just please take a second and consider the possible outcome of your actions before you act.
I'm sure your sheriff's office will put an extra watch on your home and also on the individuals particularily if you are a member of the department. I know from 20 years experience, your brother officers will look out for you.
