There will be no revival of the Pontiac Firebird and Chevy Camaro no matter how much the fans wish it, according to a higher authority at General Motors.
How high an authority? Try Bob Lutz, vice chairman of General Motors. What Lutz says can be taken to the bank, and he's just put a kibosh of persistent rumours among enthusiasts that the sporty GM twins might be coming back.
Lutz has revealed that in order to get the CAW to agree to the closure of the Camaro plant in Ste. Therese, Que., the company was forced to promise the union it would not build the car anywhere else.
The company intends to honour that pledge, because "a deal's a deal," Lutz said recently. That means no more dead chickens on hoods for a decade or so.
After that? Well, even deal makers do eventually retire.
this is from another board and was from a news article.. real? thoughts on this?
Would be very sad to loose the nameplate permanently.. what was GM thinking? (if true)

Can you give us a link to the other board and news story?

We kicked this subject around pretty good last week in this thread. I would guess the article being referred to is the same Automotive News one from 2/9.
It's not that far away if you take into account the lead time needed to roll out a new product.
I have heard everything from no Firebird/Camaro, no Camaro, but a Chevelle, then no Chevelle, a Camaro.
I've gotten conflicting stories from my various sources on this matter over the past few months.
Who knows for sure at this point? Things seem to change month-to-month, week-to-week, and day-to-day.
My personal opinion is that the redesigned "american" GTO would likely have a bowtie sibling. (*I cant stess enough that is my opinion only)

I was referring to ordering and taking delivery of one,all the guesstimating is useless,GM will make a decision and if ever it is positive you will have 3-4 years to save up your $$$.
Anyone waiting for a decision on it's future before buying a new car is in need of therapy!!!

It was in our local paper this morning. I'll scan the article and post it tomorrow.

I'm soooo depressed. Damn.
Hhhhmmm, I guess this means the Solstice won't be getting the Firebird name after all.
I will note that this stil leaves the door open for a high powered rear wheel drive sports car. The question remains though, as to whether it will be as affordable as the Camaro/Firebird were.
Desperately trying to stay positive and optimistic.

Scott likes his job at GM very much. Posted by Doug 97SS #1499 (Member # 100) on :
I am still hoping GM makes the Chevelle. If the Camaro is dead? Well its dead. Look what happen over at the MOPAR camp guys. ALL of their cars went away and they went straight to FWD. And just now they have started to bring back powerful and affordable performance vehicles. The MOPAR guys kept the faith. So I guess we have to too. So until the time comes when GM brings something worthy back, we will have to make do with what we got. So instead of retiring that high mileage F-body time to do a Stroker, new interior trim etc..

Bob has said things like this before. Although I have read/heard that several vehicles that are in the works for GM were delayed at least a year.

Yeah, and GM doesn't like or break promises?
If they think they can make money doing it, those cars will be back.
If Lutz says they are not coming back now, it would not hamper possible GTO or C6 sales to those that might wait in favor of a new F-bod.

The car never went away! If you mean the F-car, it'll NEVER EVER be back. If you mean the Camaro, a Camaro of some type ( or a car called a Camaro) may be back some time in the future.
Posted by ss_rs_z (Member # 1888) on :
We will see Jeff as only time will tell. I am not here to get into an argument with anyone over it being an F-Body, G-Body or Z-Body. All I am saying is that in my heart the Camaro will be back and when it does and I like it then I will be in in to purchase it.

I do remember someone (who shall go nameless to protect them) once told me and I quote...
".....I don't know if we can call it a 40th Anniversary Camaro....."
The 40th year would have been 2007. Make ya wonder.
Like Scott said, let's all have faith.

Hey, if Corvette can have a 50th and never have a 30th (1983) in the showrooms, then I don't see why you couldn't have a 40th Ann. Camaro....unless, of course, there isn't one by 2007. But we all hope there is, of course. I don't care if it's a WXYZ body, if it's called a Camaro, is true to the heritage, (RWD, manual tranny V8 with gobs of HP)..... I'm all for it.

Theoretically that would hold true for this statement also,,,,so we shouldn't put any more faith in this statement than in Mr. Lutz's!!!
